The Bay High Tigers pounded the North Pike Jaguars in the second half of last night's game to pick up their first win of the season with a 36-18 victory over North Pike at McCullough Stadium. The Tigers got 100+ yard out of two running backs as the team amassed more than 500 total yards of offense on the night.
Down 18-7 at halftime, the Tigers shut out the Jaguars in the second half with a punishing offense that tallied 390 rushing yards on the night from six different ball carriers. The offensive line opened gaping running lanes as six different ball carriers filled them like downhill skiers on an obstacle course. The Tigers were not going to be denied.
On defense, the Tigers made some big plays with a couple of key interceptions, a forced fumble and key stops when they needed them.
"I am so proud of these kids," said an elated Tigers head Coach Jeff Hopgood. "The character of this team is better than any I've been around.
"I challenged them to dig deep and put it on the line; whatever happens in the end, they would have to sleep with it," he explained about them being down at halftime. "And they responded the way I knew they would. I told them that we would have to take the ball down the field and score on our first possession (of the second half)."
And did they respond! The Tigers pushed the ball down the throats of the Jaguars on their first second-half possession, capping the 77-yard drive with an eight-yard bulldozing carry by Dillan Ladner for the score. Rahien Lyons outran defenders left for the two-point conversion to put the Tigers within a field goal at 18-15.
The visitors managed one snap before Elijah White recovered a fumble to put the Tigers' offense back in business at the North Pike 25 yardline. Tigers' running back Julious Allen carried three times on the drive for a total of 21 yards before quarterback Braxton Lafontaine capped the drive with a two-yard tote between the guards. Seth Johnson kicked his second PAT of the night and the Tigers took a 22-18 lead and never looked back.
The first half was all Jaguars as the visitors scored on the game's third snap with a 13-yard carry for the score and a 6-0 lead. Tyler Jordan broke through the line to block the PAT kick.
The Tigers would get on the scoreboard early in the second quarter following White stripping the ball out of the hands of a Jaguar receiver. Lafontaine capped the drive with a five-yard toss to Marshall Hoffman for the score and the Tigers led 7-6 after Johnson's PAT kick.
The visitors didn't need much time to change things as they scored twice within the last five minutes of the first half. The Tigers' defense again denied the bonus as the visitors attempted a two-point conversion.
The visitors scored with 2:26 remaining in the half as their second featured back scatted for a total of 52 yards on two carries, the second a 32 yard run for the score. Again the Tigers denied the two-point conversion attempt.
The Tigers added a couple of insurance scores late in the fourth quarter as Allen capped an 87-yard drive with a two-yard carry to give the Tigers a 29-18 lead following Johnson's PAT kick with 3:44 showing on the game clock.
After the Tigers kicked off, Ladner picked off the Jaguars on their first play from scrimmage to give the Tigers good field position at the Jaguars' 43 yardline. Lyons carried twice for the Tigers for a total of 33 yards, the second a 31-yard carry to the visitors' 11 yardline. Allen carried the final 11 yards for the score and Johnson kicked his fourth PAT on the night to close out the game's scoring.
Allen finished the night with 259 all-purpose yards: 170 rushing, including two touchdown carries; 60 on kickoff returns; and a 29-yard halfback pass. Lyons added 135 yards rushing yards and a two-point conversion carry. Lafontaine rushed for 47 yards, including a two-yard touchdown carry.
Lafontaine completed eight of 13 passes for 85 yards and a touchdown. Hoffman finished the night with two receptions for 17 yards and a touchdown. Dillan Ladner had a catch for 23 yards. Brennan Dunklin had two catches for 30 yards; E.J. Taylor made a 29-yard catch on a halfback pass from Allen.
The Tigers got strong defensive play from Jordan, Jordan Sutherlin, Damien Lewis, Kendall Island, Ladner, Phalen Booker, Lionel Haynes and others.
The Tigers offensive line blocking was key to the Tigers' victory as Brandon Mitchell and the gang created expressways. Travis Brogle tallied a fumble recovery.
The Tigers are 1-1 as they travel to Hancock next Friday night to take on the undefeated 5A Hawks in the Kiln.
