Posted Aug 29/09 - TIGERS RALLY FOR FIRST WIN FOR NEW COACH (SUN HERALD)

BAY ST. LOUIS — Bay High coach Jeff Hopgood stood in the middle of McCollough Stadium on Tank Williams Field, whipping the sweat off his brow and savoring his first win as a high school football coach.

The Tigers came roaring back in the second half to defeat North Pike 36-18.

Bay High trailed 18-7 at the half only to see Hopgood’s offense roll up yardage and 29 unanswered points.

The Jaguars scored first when Laderick Turner cashed in from the eight. The point after was blocked and North Pike led 6-0.

Bay High appeared to answer when Elijah White stripped the ball from a Jaguar receiver and ran 49 yards for an apparent touchdown only to be called back.

The Tigers got on the board in the second quarter, when Braxton Lafontaine found Marshall Hoffman for a four-yard touchdown pass.

Seth Johnson converted the point after.

Turner scored two more touchdowns in the second quarter on runs of 71 and 43 yards to give North Pike a 18-7 halftime lead.

‘‘We answered the coaches challenge as we started the second half,’’ Lafontaine said.

That the Tigers did when Dillan Ladner scored on a nine-yard run and Rahein Lyons added the two-point conversion.

Lafontaine, on the next possession, gave the Tigers the lead, one they would never relinquish n a three-yard run.

Julius Allen then nailed the coffin shut on the Jaguars with fourth quarter scoring runs of three and four yards. Allen rushed for 150 yards on 23 carries while Lyons had 139 yards on 20 carries.

‘‘The momentum changed,’’ Allen said. ‘‘We decided that we were going to get the job done and we did not fumble the football.’’

Lyons, a wide receiver, credited the offensive line for the win.

‘‘The two reasons we won were the blocking of the offensive line and we didn’t fumble to football in the second half,’’ Lyons said.

Hopgood, despite notching his first win, points to next week’s showdown in the Kiln against rival Hancock.

‘‘‘This team has more character than any I have been around,’’ Hopgood said. ‘‘We have a tough game next week at Hancock and this gives us something to build on.’’

North Pike fell to 1-1.
