Posted Jul 20/10 - Mt. Vernon wins two; set to host tourney this weekend

The Mount Vernon 15-16 VFW baseball team picked up two wins over the weekend.

Mount Vernon started with a 9-7 win over Platte-Geddes Saturday in Platte.

Cam Deinert threw all seven innings and gave up six hits and three earned runs with four walks and five strikeouts. Mike Baitenbos was tagged with the loss after giving up three earned runs and eight hits in five innings.

Cody London went 2-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI for Mount Vernon. Deinert was 2-for-5, Deric Denning was 2-for-4 and Nick Miller was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Ryan Nepodal led P-G, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Austin Plooster was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Drew Tarnis had two hits.

Sunday, Mount Vernon hosted Scotland and won 3-2.

London gave up one hit and struck out seven in five innings to earn the win. Tim Sternhagen was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs on five hits in five innings.

Denning and Dean Frey each had a hit and an RBI for Mount Vernon, which was up 3-0 heading into the top of the seventh and gave up two runs in the inning.

Garrett Kotalik and Seth Ireland had a hit for Scotland.

Mount Vernon is now 19-2 and hosts the Joe Hull Memorial VFW Baseball Invitational Tournament Saturday and Sunday in Mount Vernon. The tournament starts at 9 a.m. Saturday when Flandreau takes on Avon. Beresford and Platte-Geddes play at 11 a.m.; Irene plays Yankton at 1 p.m. and Mount Vernon takes on Freeman at 3 p.m.
