Porter powers Elsik girls back into regional final

Elsik’s Crystal Porter had to excuse herself from the postgame interview session Friday at Campbell Center. She’d been sick all day, and by the end her throat was so raw she couldn’t stop coughing.

But she never considered exiting the Lady Rams’ regional semifinal with Clear Springs.

The senior made the Lady Chargers feel worse, teaming with fellow post Akunna Elonu to power Elsik to its second consecutive trip to the Region III-5A final with a 43-40 victory.

“It was hard,” Porter said. “I have a sore throat and everything and it was really hard to communicate, especially in that loud gym.”

It’s not likely to quiet down any when Elsik (28-7), the defending regional champion, and Cypress Falls (36-2) meet in the regional final at 3 p.m. today.

Porter played her way to 16 points, 12 rebounds and six blocks, making it difficult for the Lady Chargers to get anything going inside. Elonu added 14 points, 15 rebounds and six steals.

 

 

Alief Elsik vs. Bellaire

The Lady Rams will face the Bellaire Cardinals at Stratford High on Tuesday at 6pm.

Bellaire is coming off a 66-47 win over Cy-woods. The Elsik Lady Rams defeated Cinco Ranch 56-38 to advance. The winner of Tuesdays game will advance to the Regional Tournament Friday and Saturday at the Aldine Campbell Center.

 

 

 

Lady Rams Advance to Regional Quarterfinals

The Lady Rams defeated Cinco Ranch 56-38 and will advance to the Regional Quarterfinals for the 5th year in a row. Gabby Ocanas led Elsik with 16 points and 7 rebounds. Jazmine Ocanas scored 14 points and dished out 8 assist. Akunna Elonu scored 14 points and pulled down a game high 17 rebounds. The Lady Rams will advance to the next round to face the Bellaire lady Cardinals.

The Elsik Lady Rams defeated the Cy-Creek Cougars 77-47 to advance to the 2nd round of the UIL State Playoffs. Crystal Porter recorded her first career triple-double as she scored 26 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had 10 steals. D'Jui Vaden scored 18 points while Akunna Elonu finished with 16. Jazmine Ocanas scored 9 points and dished out 8 assist. The Lady Rams will face Katy Cinco Ranch on Thursday at Mortin Ranch at 6pm.

The Lady Rams reached the Texas UIL Girls 5A tournament after a 31-6 season. The Lady Rams were awarded many awards after a great 2010-2011 basketball season.

Lady Rams finish season at State Semifinals

Elsik's season came to an end Friday night at the Erwin Center in Austin, as the Rams fell to Georgetown 56-51 in the state Class 5A girls basketball semifinals.

“They showed character throughout the playoffs,” Elsik coach LaShawn Johnson said of her team. “They’ve done a great job. Everyone doesn’t get this far, so I want them to be proud of themselves.”

The Rams (31-6) couldn’t find their rhythm to start the game and missed their first nine shots before Crystal Porter drained a jumper to end the drought.

The cold shooting primarily affected Porter and Akunna Elonu. Elsik’s standout duo combined to go 4-of-18 in the first half, which Georgetown took advantage of to build a 29-16 lead at one point in the second quarter.

After trailing by as many as 15 points, Elsik upped the pressure and forced turnovers to get back in the game, ultimately trimming the deficit to 52-51 with 59 seconds left.

Elsik  had a chance to tie with 27 seconds left but Jazmine Ocanas' 3-pointer rattled out. Crystal porter scored 16 to lead Elsik, while Jazmine Ocanas scored 11. Junior Forward Crystal Porter was named to the state all-tournament team.

Lady Rams Headed to Austin for State Championship!

The Lady Rams are going back to the State Tournament for the 5th time in school history after defeating the North Shore Mustangs 48-38. Crystal Porter was unstoppable from the inside and outside as she led all scorers with 18 points. 

The Mustangs struggled all night against Elsik's defense led by Akunna Elonu, Telissa Spencer and Raven Hill limiting North Shore to 6 points in the 2nd quarter and 8 points in the 4th. Jazmine Ocanas took over in the 2nd quarter as she scored 9 of her 11 points in the quarter on 3 long 3-pointers. 

Akunna Elonu scored 8 points to go with a game high 16 rebounds. Lindsey Cypher scored 8.

The Lady Rams will play in Austin for the first time since 1998 when they  won the state tittle over Amarillo Palo Duro. 

The Lady Rams will face Georgetown on Friday at 8:30 pm.

The Lady Rams defeated the Clear Springs Chargers on Friday night 63-56. 

The Lady Rams were led by Crystal Porter who scored 19 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Akunna Elonu scored 15 of her 17 points in the second half and finished with 11 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Lindsey Cypher knocked down two long threes and finished with 10. Jazmine Ocanas dished out 8 assist to go with 10 points.

The Elsik Lady Rams will face Northshore for a trip to the State Tournament final 4 on Saturday at 4pm.

Elsik Rams Advance to Regionals!

The Lady Rams advanced to the Regional Tournament by defeating Cypress Woods on Tuesday night in a hard fought game. 

The Lady Rams trailed the entire game due to hot shooting by Cy Woods and entered the 4th quarter trailing 45-41. 

The Lady Rams outscored Cy Woods 19-9 in the fourth quarter and hung on to a 60-54 win.

Crystal Porter led all scorers with 25 points while Jazmine Ocanas and Telissa Spencer chipped in 10.

The Lady Rams will face Clear Springs on Friday in the Regional Tournament at the Campbell Center. Tipoff time has yet to be determined.

Sixth-ranked Rams advance with 51-33 win over Cinco Ranch

The Lady Rams cruised to a bi-district playoff win over Cinco Ranch Friday night at Don Coleman Coliseum. The hot hand of Jazmine Ocanas who hit 4-three pointers was too much for the Cinco Ranch Cougars to handle.

The inside duo of Crystal Porter and Akunna Elonu were stellar on Defense as they held both of the Cougars inside threats to under 10 points.  Akunna Elonu pulled down 15 rebounds to go along with 8 points. Crystal porter contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds. 

Lindsey Cypher also had a hot hand tonight knocking down 3- three pointers and finishing with 13 points. 

The Lady Rams will face Cypress Woods on Tuesday at Katy Mayde Creek high School at 6:30 pm. This will be the third consecutive year that the Lady Rams have advanced to the Regional Quarter-finals. 

Lady Rams top Cy Creek in bi-district round of playoffs

The Elsik Lady Rams defeated Cy Creek Tuesday night 58-48 to advance to the area round of the playoffs. Akunna Elonu led the Lady Rams with 20 points while Crystal Porter finished with 19. 

The Lady Rams move on to the next round and will face Katy Cinco Ranch Friday at Don Coleman Coleseum at 7pm.

Lady Rams Finish District Undefeated, Again!

The Lady Rams finished district 18-5A undefeated for the third year in a row after defeating Aldine MacArthur 70-28 on Tuesday.

This game was also Senior Night for Lindsey Cypher, Raven Hill, Kizzy Omuruyi and Telissa Spencer.

 

The Lady Rams were up 35-8 at halftime after only allowing 4 points in each quarter in the first half.

 

The inside duo of Crystal Porter and Akunna Elonu each scored 20 points while Lindsey Cypher scored 13.

 

The Lady Rams will face Cy-Creek in the first round of the playoffs on Tuesday at Seven Lakes High School at 7pm.

 

 

 

Lady Rams Clinch District Championship

Akunna Elonu scored 28 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Lady Rams over Alief Taylor to win to their 3rd straight district championship. The game was scheduled for Friday but because of the severe winter storm that saw schools closed across the area the game was played on Saturday. 

The Lady Rams started off on a 7-0 run and never looked back as they went on to defeat Taylor 69-40. 

Crystal Porter scored 18 points for the Lady Rams and Lindsey Cypher scored 10. The rams are 11-0 in district and face Aldine MacArthur on Tuesday at home to close out district play.

Rams Remain Undefeated In District

     The inside and outside duo of Crystal Porter and Jazmine Ocanas was too much for Nimitz to handle as the Rams moved to 9-0 in district play with a 80-33 win on Friday night. Crystal Porter finished with 23 points while Jazmine Ocanas scored 20.

The Lady Rams controlled the game from the opening tip and went on a 20-6 run to open the first quarter. The score was 43-12 Elsik at halftime and the Lady Rams never looked back after that. Lindsey Cypher knocked down four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points. Akunna Elonu had a double-double finishing with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Continue District Winning Streak

The Elsik Lady Rams have not lost a district game in three years and nothing changed Tuesday night as they defeated Eisenhower 51-26.

The Lady Rams had four players score in double figures. Akunna Elonu led all scorers with 14 points and Crystal Porter scored 13. Lindsey Cypher scored 11 points and Raven Hill finished with 10. The Lady Rams travel to Nimitz on friday. 

 

 

 

 

Lady Rams win big over rival Hastings

The Lady Rams started off slow last night against a scrappy Hastings team but lead 21-15 at halftime. The second half saw a totally different Elsik squad that outscored Hastings 20-2  in the 3rd quarter. Hastings only managed 9 points in the second half versus 39 for Elsik. The Lady Rams move to 21-5 with a 60-24 win. Akunna Elonu and Crystal Porter each scored 19 points in the win.    

 

Lady Rams cruise past Macarthur

The Lady Rams defeated the Macarthur Lady Generals on Friday night 57-27 to improve to 20-5 on the season. Akunna Elonu led all scorers with 18 points while Jazmine Ocanas and Crystal Porter scored 16 and 12 respectively. The Lady rams will face rival Alief Hastings on Tuesday at Elsik.

Porter, Elonu combine to lead Rams past Lions

The combination of Crystal Porter and Akunna Elonu helped Elsik take control of the District 18-5A race with a 55-38 victory over visiting Alief Taylor on Friday night.

Porter and Elonu combined for 33 points and 36 rebounds as the Rams improved to 5-0 in league play and 18-5 for the season.

The Lions fell to 4-1 and 13-9.

Porter was a force on the floor. She finished with 19 points, 21 rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals.

“Crystal is capable of doing that,” Elsik coach LaShawn Johnson said. “This is going to be her breakout year, as a junior where people begin to realize that she is a pretty good player on both ends of the floor.

“What I liked about Crystal is that she played hard. Even when she made a mistake, she was playing hard.”

Alief Taylor was unable to pay extra attention to Porter due to the efforts of Elonu, who collected 14 points and 15 rebounds.

Elonu and Porter were especially effective in the fourth quarter, often rebounding each other’s misses as Elsik outscored Taylor 19-6 to break open what was a four-point game after three periods.

“That is a good one-two punch, those two,” Johnson said. “I wouldn’t trade them for nothing.”

Careless ball-handling and poor shooting forced Alief Taylor to play from behind from the outset.

The Lions were 0-for-7 from the floor in the first quarter and turned the ball over 11 times in 19 possessions in falling behind 12-3 early.

Alief Taylor made runs in the second and third quarters behind the inside play of Jazmyne Victorien, who finished with 16 points.

Inconsistent play hurt the Lions, as they could never pull closer than four points.

Elsik often fell prey to the same mistakes, but managed to retain its lead.

“I think a lot of that (retaining the lead) has to do with what Taylor did to us,” Johnson said.”

Lady Rams win big over Aldine

The Elsik Lady Rams were on fire from the beginning to the end in a 102-25 win over Aldine.

Lindsey Cypher connected on 5 long 3-pointers and finished with a career high 28 points. Akunna Elonu and Crystal Porter scored 16 a piece and Jazmine Ocanas and Raven Hill each scored 15.

The Lady Rams continue their district dominance and improve to 4-0. The Lady Rams face neighborhood rival Alief Taylor on Friday at Elsik High School.

 

Lady Rams win final game of 2010

The Elsik Lady Rams won their final game of 2010 slipping by Dulles 48-46 in a New Years Eve battle. Akunna Elonu lead the way for the Lady Rams with 18 points while Jazmine Ocanas and Lindsey Cypher each scored 10. The Lady Rams return to district play on Tuesday when they travel to to face the Aldine Lady Mustangs.

Lady Rams move to 3-0 in District

The Lady Rams rolled in their last game before Christmas as they defeated Nimitz  61-18. Elsik jumped out on a 22-2 run in the first quarter and never looked back. Nimitz could only manage 5 points at halftime as Elsik led 34-5.

 Leading the way for Elsik was Crystal Porter who finished with a game high 18 points . Telissa Spencer scored 12 and Akunna Elonu finished with 10. The Lady Rams do not play again until December 31st when they host Dulles.

Lady Rams Continue District Run

Lady Rams go 3-1 In Peggy Whitley Tournament

The Lady Rams scored victories over Clear Lake, Elkins and Cy-Fair this past weekend at the Peggy Whitley. The only setback was a loss to the #5 team in the state Northshore.  

 

Elsik wins over rival Hastings

The Lady Rams jumped out to a 16-0 lead over the Hastings Bears and never looked back in a 58-23 victory. The Bears struggled getting the ball past half court against the Lady Rams pressure defense. Elsik jumped out to a 18-4 lead after the first quarter after two long 3-pointers  in the first couple of  minutes by Jazmine Ocanas. Hastings could only manage to score 9 points in the first half against the Lady Rams defense. Akunna Elonu and Crystal Porter made it difficult for the Bears to get any shots inside. Lillian Taylor had a breakout game off the bench for the Lady Rams scoring 10 points. The Lady Rams have not lost a district game in three years and move to 1-0 in 18-5A. Up next for Elsik is the Peggy Whitley tournament in Clear Creek.

Lady Rams Hot and Cold in Katy Tournament

The Elsik Lady Rams started off the Katy Tournament on fire with a 62-26 blowout victory over host Katy. In the next game the Lady Rams faced a familiar foe in Cy-Falls, the #1 ranked team in the state. Cy-Falls and Elsik met just 4 days earlier in a game that saw Cy-Falls defeat Elsik. This game was different as Elsik redeemed themselves and won over Cy-Falls 65-50.

Hightower another state ranked opponent was next for Elsik. The Lady Rams struggled offensively and fell 73-58. The Lady Rams finished the tournament winning vs. Barber Hills 48-39 and losing to Katy Taylor 44-39.

Elsik Falls to #1 team in State

The Lady Rams could not get anything going against the  #1 team in the state Cy-Falls and fell 45-31 at home Tuesday  night.

Elsik started off in a hole trailing after the first 12-2. By halftime the Lady Rams were down 24-9.  Cy-Falls led by as many as 28 in the fourth until  the lady rams scored the final 14 points of the game. 

 

Lady Rams knock off defending State Champs!

Cy-Fair honored their team before the game by unveiling their state championship banner they earned from the 2009-2010 basketball season. The Lady Rams spoiled the banner night by defeating the champions in their own gym 51-48. 

After trailing at halftime 28-20 the Lady Rams used some long range three-pointers by Lindsey Cypher and lock down defense by Crystal Porter and Telissa Spencer to even the score at 35-35 after the 3rd.

The Lady Rams made it difficult for Cy-Fair to get into any type of rhythm offensively in the 4th as they edged out Cy-Fair 51-48.

Akunna Elonu finished the game with a game high 17. Lindsey Cypher and Jasmine Ocanas scored 12 and 11 respectively.   

Lady Rams Finish 2nd in Fort Bend Tournament

The Lady Rams went 4-1 in this past weekends annual Fort Bend Invitational. The Lady Rams had impressive victories over Fort Bend Travis, Victoria West, Fort Bend Austin and Katy Seven Lakes. 

The Lady Rams had anticipated a match-up with #1 state ranked Hightower but Katy Taylor spoiled the party upsetting Hightower in the semifinals.

The Lady Rams were poised to take the championship home to Alief leading Katy Taylor after the 1st quarter 12-8. Junior forward Crystal Porter injured her ankle in the 2nd quarter and the momentum shifted with Katy Taylor outscoring Elsik 17-12 making the score 25-24 Katy Taylor at halftime.

The Lady Rams could not get into any offensive rhythm in the second half and trailed 40-35 at the end of the 3rd period. With junior forward Akunna Elonu and Raven Hill in foul trouble the rams were in trouble.

The rams made one more run in the 4th and final period closing the lead to three but Katy Taylor held on outscoring the Lady Rams 14-12. The final score was 54-47 Katy Taylor.

Leading the way for the Lady Rams was Crystal Porter 14, Telissa Spencer 12, and Jazmine Ocanas 10.

   

Lady Rams defeat Fort Bend Travis 63-14

The Lady Rams faced a winless Fort Bend Travis team in the first round of the Fort Bend Invitational. The rams started out strong and never looked backas they cruised to a 63-14 win and improved to 3-0.

Akunna Elonu scored 16, Jazmine Ocanas and Crystal Porter fininshed with 15 and 14 and Telissa
Spencer scored 10 in the victory.

 The Lady Rams face Victoria West on Friday in a second round matchup. The winner will advance to the quarter-finals of the winners side of the Fort Bend Tournament. The tournament championship game is set for 7:30 on Saturday night at Wheeler Fieldhouse.

 

 Lady Rams move to 2-0

The #4 Lady Rams traveled to The Woodlands on Tuesday night to face the #9 Lady Highlanders.

The Lady Rams were coming off a 71-37 victory over #5 Bellaire last week. The Lady Highlanders were coming off a 47-39 win over Cy-Creek in the Championship game of the Conroe Tournament.

This game was an early season test for both undefeated area and state ranked teams.

After the first quarter Elsik took a 15-13 lead on strong play from junior forward Akunna Elonu who finished the game with 15 points.

In the second quarter Elsik was up by as many as 7 but a run by The Woodlands closed the lead and made it 31-27 Elsik at halftime.

In the third quarter Elsik looked like they would pull away but The Woodlands kept fighting as Elsik held on 45-39 going into the final period.

Junior point guard Jasmine Ocanas took over in the fourth quarter scoring 10 of her game high 19 in the final period. Senior Guard Raven Hill stepped up and scored 10 points for the Lady Rams.

A desperation 3-pointer by The Woodlands at the  buzzer cut the lead to 4 and made the final 58-54 Elsik.

The Lady Rams improve to 2-0 on the young season while The Woodlands go to 4-1.

The Lady Rams will be in the Fort Bend Varsity Tournament November 18-20.    

 

Lady Rams get revenge from last years playoff loss

The Elsik Lady Rams were devastated following last year’s playoff exit in the regional quarterfinals after a buzzer-beater basket by Bellaire. This year the #4 Lady Rams wanted revenge, and never looked back after starting the game on a 10-0 run. The Lady Rams outscored the #5 Bellaire Lady Cardinals 23-9 after the first quarter. Jasmine Ocanas got into early foul trouble in the first quarter and had to sit when Bellaire made their run closing the Elsik lead to 11, at halftime Bellaire trailed 34-23. The dynamic duo of Crystal Porter and Akunna Elonu held the team together at the start of the 2nd half and led Elsik to a 51-35 third quarter lead. Bellaire had no answer for Elsik's pressure defense as the Lady Rams led by Raven Hill's 8 points closed out the 4th quarter with a 20-6 run. Elsik only dressed out 7 players in the 71-41 victory over Bellaire. Akunna Elonu scored 25 points and grabbed a team high 18 rebounds while Crystal Porter and Jasmine Ocanas scored 25 and 12 respectively. The Lady rams play next at The Woodlands on November 16.

Elsik Lady Rams Ranked #12 in TABC State Poll

Last season Hightower was a 35-3 state finalist. Coach Deborah Mize returns three starters and

eleven letter winners and will be the favorites to win it all. Realignments have brought Cy-Fair back

into region III and Ann Robique returns all-state Cassie Peoples along with five other returnees

from a 36-1 state champ. They will receive a challenge within district 17 from Cy Falls where

James Stephens has three starters and ten letter winners from a 29-5 regional quarterfinalist.

LeShawn Johnson at Elsik returns five all-district performers including the MVP for a 26-6 region

quarterfinalist to further cloud the picture.

San Antonio Jay (35-5) was also a final four team last year and Mike Floyd returns four starters

including all-state player Erica Donavan. Jay edged Wagner (33-3) last February to earn the trip to

Austin and Christina Camacho graduated four seniors, but the Thunderbirds have another group of

athletes ready to step up and a solid program that makes them a threat every year.

Irving MacArthur was a 37-2 regional finalist and Coach Suzie Oelschlegel’s Lady Cardinals are

the favorites to take the next step. Four starters and nine veterans return including all-state Alexis

Jones. Duncanville coach Cathy Self-Morgan returns an all-region pick, good size and plenty of

tradition to make the 33-4 regional quarterfinalists dangerous as always. Colleyville Heritage welcomes

back seven of their top eleven, including all-state Alexia Standish. Coach Diana Seger also

had a 27-3 JV making expectations high for the 23-10 playoff team. Mansfield Timberview will

battle Duncanville in district 5 and the 39-2 state champs in 4A will always be a presence.

Region II has a trio of thoroughbreds that will battle for the regional crown. Georgetown and

Pflugerville will do battle in district 16 before entering the playoffs. Rhonda Farney has an allregion

performer plus a DI signee that played on the JV last year while the Lady Eagles were 31-4

regional qualifiers. Cassandra McCurdy returns three starters and six letter winners, including allstater

Krystal Barrett for a 31-3 regional team at Skyline. Pflugerville has a returning all-region pick

among four starters and ten lettermen. Nancy Walling’s Lady Panthers were a 29-6 regional qualifier

last year and players from a 29-1 JV will add competition and depth.

Several  Lady Rams Receive Post Season Awards!

The  Elsik  Lady Rams held their annual Basketball Banquet Wednesday night handing out awards to those that showed excellence during the season. In addition to several individual awards, the Lady Rams were awarded the District 18-5A district crown after going undefeated with a record of 12-0. The Lady Rams record now stands at 24-0 in District 18-5A the past two years.

Lady  Rams Lose Heartbreaker at Buzzer! 

The Elsik lady rams have three score in double figures but still fall to Bellaire 79-77 on buzzer beater. Akuna Elonu lead the way for Elsik with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Crystal Porter scored 19 and Jazmine Ocanas chips in 19. Elsik ends the season at 25-6

 

Lady Rams start slow but finish strong vs MacArthur and win 68-35!

 The Elsik Lady Rams advance to the Texas State Regional Quarterfinals for the 3rd year in a row. Jazmine Ocanas leads the way with 18 points. Lindsey Cypher continues with the hot hand scoring 12 points off 4 three-pointers. Akuna Elonu chips in 10 points and Adaeze Elonu finishes with 13 points after scoring 11 in the 4th!

 Elsik Lady Rams Cruise past Katy Mayde Creek in 1st round!!!

Although Elsik had a very comfortable lead by the end of the third quarter in its bi-district playoff game against Mayde Creek on Tuesday night, coach LaShawn Johnson never stopped coaching.

Elsik continued to run different plays, work with different lineups and eventually walked off the court with a 91-44 win and a spot in the area playoffs later this week.

“I don't want them to look at the score and get comfortable,” Johnson said. “We are in the playoffs so it's really important to play like you are up one point or down by two. In this game, people can come back on you and I don't want the team to let up at this point in the season.”

Elsik's leading scorer, Jasmine Ocanas, was in foul trouble early, but because of the Rams' depth, it didn't matter.

Junior Akunna Elonu took charge in the second quarter and scored 11 points to help give Elsik a 44-25 lead at halftime.

“Even though we were up at halftime, we knew it could have been a lot closer because they were getting good shots and lucky for us they were missing,” Elonu said. “We just had to start playing better defense. If we play good defense, our scoring comes with it.”

That was evident in the third quarter when Elsik's defense smothered Mayde Creek. Elsik outscored Mayde Creek 27-5 in that quarter.

Elsik (23-5) was led by Telissa Spencer's 22 points. Jazzmin Parker led Mayde Creek with 14 points.

“This was a good game for us,” Johnson said. “The score doesn't show it, but Mayde Creek deserves a lot of credit for getting us out of rhythm a few times, and we had to make some adjustments. I think that was a good learning experience.”

Mayde Creek, the fourth-place team from District 17-5A, finished the season 19-13.

Elsik plays Aldine MacArthur in the second round at 6pm Friday at Alief Taylor High School.
