Game Notes: What a Wild -N- Crazy home opener for the Bluejays!!! With no other option, Ben "Vinny" Smothers got the start on the hill. Victoria struck first with 2 out, then a double and a single and it was 1-0 Vic's. The Bluejays left the bases loaded in the bottom half, which became common in this game.
The Plato hitters drew 13 walks, everyone in the starting line up had at least 1, but couldn't capitalize with a big hit to score any runs. History looked like it might be made in Plato as the Vic's had a no hitter going into the bottom of 7. After an out Kyle Panning, who just returned from college, breaks the no hit bid with a infield single (clean infield single) but no other harm done.
Now to the 8th inn were things get wild. Coach Boomer waits till just the right time, then calls on (Thome) to hit, I mean Joe Nix. Nixy battles with 2 strikes, and flares a bleeder into right for our 2nd hit and a start to the 8th. (Slater re-enters to run) Quick throw to 1st and ball gets by and Slater to 2nd. Dittmer gets down a sac bunt, but catchers throw hits him and Slater comes into score, Ditty on 1st.Now Smothers, bunts and beats it out for a hit. 1st and 2nd no outs. tied 1-1. Johnson trys to sac bunt but can't get it down, with 2 strikes, he lines a ball to 2nd baseman who catches it, steps on 2nd, then throws to 1st for a TRIPLE PLAY!!! Unreal, the jaws were on the dugout floor and the wind out of our sails.
Smothers gets a 1,2,3 9th, now to the bottom. Lang leads off with a misplayed ball by the center fielder ruled and error and lang gets to 2nd. Eric sac bunts him to 3rd. The Vic's do the smart thing and walk the next 2 batters to set up force outs and double play ball. Boomer batting, lines the 1st pitch to left for a walk off single scoring Lang, Bluejays win 2-1.
Plato left 14 runners on base, and was frustrated at the plate with no timely hits, until the 9th.
On the hill Smothers threw a 129 pitch gem!!!
On offense no one really hit, just lots of walks, and we were able to pull out a win over a good Vic's team.
The Bluejays have now avenged 4 losses from last season, in their first 4 games!!
