Game Notes: Ferber & Frojd (5)

Eastview (25-13-1) won a thriller over 5th seeded Shoreview in the Round of 16 Sunday morning by a score of 5-4 in 8 innings. The game was tight the entire time around but Eastview was never trailing. The first five Lightning batters reached as Grimm (BB, RS), Ferber (2 1B, 2 RS) & Buck (2 1B, RS) all reached base and scored. Shoreview got an unearned run in the 3rd, following a leadoff walk and a passed ball. In the 4th, walks continued to hurt as Shoreview walked twice and had three hits, but left the bases loaded after tying the game at 3. Eastview wasted no time in taking the lead. With Ferber on first and 2 outs, Jack Frojd hit an RBI double to take the lead. Then, following a leadoff walk in the bottom frame, Frojd came on to get double play on his first pitch. He retired six in a row after that before giving up a full-count walk on a very close pitch with Shoreview down to their last out. Following a hit batsmen on an 0-2 count, the Mustangs tied it up with an RBI single. Frojd hit another batter to put the winning run 90 feet away. Eastview got out of the jam on a weak groundball to bring the game to extra innings. Joe Furnstahl worked the count after falling behind 0-2 as he found some room in shallow right field to dump it in. On the next pitch, he stole 2nd base without a throw. Matt Smith missed a bunt attempt but got the job done in the at bat with a fly ball to center, moving Furnstahl to 3rd base. Jack Foy stepped in the box and executed a safety squeeze to perfection as he rolled it down the first base line, scoring Furnstahl. Frojd retired the Mustangs in order in the 8th inning to finish off Shoreview. With the win, Eastview advanced to the State Quarterfinals to face the winner of top seeded EP Red or 4th seed New Ulm. Coming off a successful appearance in this game, Jack Frojd (3-0, 3.79) will take the start in the quarterfinal game.

Frojd (W, 3-0)
