Game Notes: Ferber, Buck (5) & Furnstahl (7)

Eastview (12-2-1) won its opening round playoff game against 6th seeded Waconia 11-3. Waconia was coming off a 7-0 weekend at the MBT State Tournament as they went on to win the championship. Eastview showed a lot more energy and had the hot bats. Furnstahl (SB, 1B, BB), Perlenfein (2 RS, 3 SB), Ferber (3 BB, 2 RS), Buck (3 RS, RBI, 2 BB) & Frojd (2 H, RBI) reached base consecutively to make the score 2-0 early. Following a run-scoring double play and a wild pitch, it was 4-0 Lightning before the Wildcats could even touch their bats. And not many baseball touched a Waconia bat as they were held to only four hits on the evening. After Waconia got a run in the 2nd, the Lightning put two up on the board right away. Ferber and Buck walked and Frojd singled to load the bases. Grimm (2 RS, 2 1B) drove in Ferber and Buck scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-1. Waconia got one more in the 3rd after a triple but yet again the Lightning scored in the 4th. With runners on the corners and two outs, Waconia attempted to pick Ferber off. Perlenfein almost broke home but the first basemen looked him back right away. After throwing a pitch, they attempted to pick Ferber off at first again. This time Perlenfein broke on the throw and scored without even drawing a throw to make it 7-2. In the 5th, the bats got hot again. Buck, Grimm & Smith (RS, RBI, BB) all singled and scored. The Lightning drew 5 walks in the 7th to put an 11th run on the board and all but put the game away. Ferber got his 5th start of the season and is 5-0 in those starts. He was effectively wild as he walked 9 but only gave up 3 hits. He constantly worked out of jams as Waconia left 9 men on base. 10 hitters for Eastview reached base (either on a walk or a hit) as it was a total team effort. The team defense, pitchers throwing strikes, and overall "little things" will need to improve if Eastview hopes to continue its success in postseason play. The Lightning travel to 3rd seeded Rochester as they face off with the Region 4 champions. The Royals have given up fewer runs than any other MBL team (43 total) as that helped them to a 13-3 record on the season (only 6 times did an opponent score more than 3). Scott Perlenfein (6-3, 2.57) will take the mound in hopes of shutting down Rochester and giving his team a great chance of advancing to the playoff semifinals. Game date, time and location are all currently TBA.

Ferber (W, 5-0)
