McDevitt MANKATO -- In a big game among teams tied for second place, Eastview (7-4) fell to Mankato 5-1. Mankato had control of the game from the get-go as they easily had more intensity than the Lightning. They jumped on a lot of fastballs early in counts as McDevitt (CG, 7 H, 1 BB, 5 K) went the distance and gave up 5 runs, throwing only 70 pitches. Mankato had only two 1-2-3 innings of offense while the Lightning had five. The Royals' starter was effectively slow with an even slower lob ball (couldn't quite call it a change-up) that kept Eastview out in front all game long as they could not make the needed adjustment. There were two innings where the Lightning threatened -- 4th and 6th. In the 4th, with the score 2-0 Mankato, Leighton (SAC) led off with a walk and McDevitt followed with a single. Mankato got a double play before getting out of the inning following an error. In the 6th, Augustin led off the inning with a pinch-hit walk, moved to second as Leighton attempted to bunt for a hit and scored on a 2-out Selchow single to make it 3-1. After Mankato put two up in the bottom of the 6th to make it 5-1, Eastview went down in order once again. The Lightning defense was solid all game long with 0 errors committed and McDevitt only walked one. Eastview now falls one game behind Mankato and 1.5 games behind Lakeville North. They are still one game above 4th place Shakopee. Even with tonight's loss, they have won 7 of 9. The Lightning take a few days off before heading up north to Big Lake for a tournament. Pool play begins Saturday morning at 815am. Keegan Dickson (1-0, 1.75) makes his first start on the season against Sibley East. Adam Stockwell (1-0, 2.47) takes the ball in the afternoon game against Hopkins. McDevitt (L, 0-1) |
