Game Notes: Preston Bruce field in Duncan was the setting for a thrilling battle Thursday night between the Midget AAA Mid-Island Mustangs and the Victoria Mariners. The Mustangs came out ahead 3- 0 in a very close game. The game was a display of great pitching and sound defensive baseball with neither team committing an error. The Mustangs usually play their home games at Dogwood Park in Ladysmith, so it was a treat for Duncan baseball fans to have the high caliber game in the “City of Totems”. The Mustangs starting pitcher Andrew Jeklin was very solid throughout the game; striking out 7 and scattering 4 hits through 6 shutout innings. Andrew also made a great catch in the third inning on a hard hit line drive that nearly took his head off. The visiting Mariner’s starting pitcher Michael Turcotte was also solid; that may be why the Mustangs’ Manager Mike Rochon and third base coach Dean Eaton decided to play small ball and try to make the most out of every base runner. The Mustangs scored their first run as a result of some great base running, catcher Chris Cline who got on base on a fielders choice, advanced all the way to third on a right field single by Cody Dupont. With Cline on third, Dupont attempted to steal second, the Victoria catcher elected to try and throw him out, Cline took this opportunity to take off for home plate on a delayed steal narrowly beating the throw from second. From there on it was a pitcher’s duel with some outstanding defensive baseball thrown in for good measure. One such play saw centre fielder Tyler Rochon making an outstanding catch when Victoria was threatening to tie the game in the fourth inning. The score remained 1-0 until the home portion of the sixth inning when with one out Dupont hit a seeing-eye single up the middle and later stole second. Dupont advanced to third on a ground out bringing up Dylan McKinlay the Mustangs clean-up hitter. After the Victoria pitcher fell behind 2 and 0 the Mariner’s manager decided to intentionally walk McKinlay. Rochon countered by pinch running with speedster Steve Bossons who proceeded to steal second. This set the stage for Max Kok of the Mustangs to perform, after falling behind in the count he managed to work it full at 3 and 2 and on the next pitch ripped a hard line drive to deep left field driving in both runners for a couple of insurance runs for the home team. Kok was thrown out at third trying to turn his hit into a triple. Relief pitcher Kevin Pellerin was brought in to close the game. He proceeded to get the first two batters out; one on a fly ball to left expertly handled by Carson Mullins, the next on a pop-up to first baseman Cody Windsor. The next Victoria batter barely snuck a line drive past a diving Ben Chadwick at shortstop who had shifted towards third to accommodate for Pellerin’s off-speed junk. The next batter walked, bringing the tying run to the plate. After a few tense moments for the home team, Pellerin got the save by inducing the third out on a low slider creating a soft liner to Dupont at second base. The Mustangs are off to Vancouver on Sunday for a double header against South Okanogan, but return to Preston Bruce Field July 10th for another game against Victoria.
