Game Notes: After rain postponed the game twice, Patrick Henry and Franklin County finally got their game on. For those who made the trip down Route 220, they were not disappointed. It was a classic game between two great programs. The Patriots started the scoring early and took a 1-0 lead heading into the home half of the first. But, the Eagles responded with their own run support and pushed three across to bring the score to 3-1 after one complete. For the Patriots, their scoring was not done. PH rallied for 2 runs in the top of the second to knot the game at 3 apiece. Junior pitcher Aaron Burton held the Eagles in the nest pitching 3 shut out innings. "I think Aaron gave us everything he had in the tank. He did a great job mixing his pitches and keeping a good hitting team off balance." said Head Coach Aaron Haigler. With Burton holding the Eagles off, the diamond Patriots continued to push runs across the plate, posting runs in the all but 2 innings of play. Senior 1B Kemper Steffe continued to have the hot bat having a 2-3 day touching all bags twice and driving in 2 runs. "Kemper has got to hit for us. Younger players rally around him and we go as he goes." added Haigler. Other Patriots having good days were Junior Will Kaufman 1-3 with a HR and Senior Yates Sayers going 1-2 with 3 BB (2 IBB) and driving in 1 run. Franklin County made it close as they rallied back scoring 2 in the 5th and 3 in the 6th making the score 9-8 PH going into the 7th inning. "Our players really played great in the last two innings. FC had their chances but we stayed the course and pulled out the W." said Haigler. "For me, the turning point in the games was Burton throwing behind the stranded runner at 2B for the out. That play really took some wind out of FC's sail." Haigler said. With the tying run only 90 feet away, Kaufman got Nock Colliver to fly out to Lucian Grove who secured the final out for the Patriots. With the win, Patrick Henry stands 2-0 in the WVD and will head to Danville on Tuesday night to take on yet another Eagle team. "Danville was young last year but seem to be playing really good baseball. We will have to play another good game and take care of the baseball." Haigler said of Danville.
