Melzarek Eastview (18-13-1) knocked off Shoreview to end pool play Saturday morning. Shoreview came into the tournament as the 2nd seed in the entire state and is now going home with a 1-2 record! With the win, Eastview advances on to bracket play as the 2nd seed from Pool B. Cottage Grove received the top spot and plays in the Quarterfinals Sunday morning. Eastview won with some spectacular pitching, almost perfect defense, some very smart and timely hitting & some great baserunning! Melzarek (2 R, SB) started things off in the 4th with a base hit and E6. Melzarek then stole 3rd base after Allen (3 R, 3 SB) had walked and then Allen stole 2nd. Anderson (2B, RBI) followed up with a single and a stolen base. With runners at 2nd and 3rd and only 1 out, Jonas (2 RBI) layed down a perfect suicide squeeze to give the Lightning a big 2-0 lead. They tallied 1 in the 6th and broke it open in the 7th with 2 doubles & 4 runs in the inning! Melzarek was a leadoff walk away from a shutout against a team who "hasn't been shutout in 3 years," according to their head coach. Eastview was in an elimination situation and played their best game of the season. Now they hand the ball to Henry (0-0, 2.33) who is making only his 2nd start and 3rd appearance on the season. Game time is set for 9am Sunday against Lakeville South, who Eastview has already defeated three times on the year. Melzarek (W, 7-3) |
