Posted Mar 10/14 - Cardinal Season Comes to Bitter End Against Etown

The Cardinals gave it all they had during the 2013-14 season, but fell short in the region semifinal against Etown, 64-60. The back and forth contest came to an end with a 14-3 run by the Panthers to seal the victory, but both teams were very deserving of advancing. The Cards did all they could do and were unlucky to finish on the losing end. Senior Caleb Wigginton led the way in his final appearence for the Cardinals, finishing with 24 points and 7 rebounds. Wigginton surpassed the 2,000 point mark for his career in the first half and will go down as the third all-time leading scorer in Taylor County Boys' Basketball history at 2,019. Junior Austin Webster added 12 points and 8 rebounds while sophomore Quentin Goodin tallied 14 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Senior Brady Turpin knocked down two three-pointers to finish with 6 points and freshman David Sloan assisted on 7 baskets. Wigginton and Goodin were both named to the All-Region Tournament Team. The matchup was the final game for seniors Wigginton, Turpin, and Weston Sullivan, who brought 3 District Championships to Taylor County Basketball in 4 years.

Posted Mar 10/14 - Cards Edge Out Generals

From here on out, nothing will be easy for the Taylor County Cardinals. However, the Cards were able to squeak past the Thomas Nelson Generals in a 60-59 sloppy contest. The Cardinals could hardly find their shooting stroke, as the team shot 35% from the field and 52% from the charity stripe. The Generals were also able to control the pace, not allowing the Cards to utilize their transition offense. No matter how ugly, the Cardinals were still able to advance to the region semifinal against Etown on Monday night at 6 EST. Freshman Ezra Oliver was the difference maker for the Cardinals, as he scored the first 7 points for the Cards. Oliver finished with 14 points and 5 rebounds. Sophomore Quentin Goodin ended with a double-double, 14 points and 10 rebounds and also added 5 assists while freshman David Sloan totaled 16 point. Senior Caleb Wigginton tallied 10 points and 6 rebounds and junior Austin Webster rounded out the scoring with 6 points and 9 rebounds. The Cards survived and advanced and will face region contender Etown on Monday.

Posted Mar 3/14 - Cards Capture 20th District Championship

To the victors go the spoils. The Taylor County Cardinals were victorious in the District Championship game, achieving their first goal of the postseason. After a close-to-perfect start by both teams, the Cardinals were able to use the 2nd and 3rd quarters to pull away from the Adair County Indians, 71-48. Although the Cardinals shot a dismal 11 of 22 from the free throw line, their will to win significantly outmatched that of the Indians. The Cardinals have won three out of the past four district championships and were repeat champions. Guard Quentin Goodin finished  with 26 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. Goodin was named to the District All-Season and All-Tournament Teams. Forward Caleb Wigginton totalled 21 points and 6 rebounds and earned spots on the District All-Season, All-Tournament, and All-Academic Teams. Wigginton was also named Most Outstanding Player of the District Tournament. Guard David Sloan tallied 8 points and 7 rebounds while guard Ezra Oliver contributed 7 points and 8 rebounds. Posted Feb 28/14 - Cards Handle Eagles, Advance to District Championship

The postseason is always a time of uncertainty. Never are the outcomes definite and a game, a season, and a career can be over in the blink of an eye. The 20th District Tournament always guarentees great basketball games from the district's four teams. The Cardinals triumphed over the Eagles, 82-52, but the scoreline is not indicative of the scrappiness seen throughout the game. Both teams hustled and also made silly mistakes in the heat of the moment, proving the desire of both teams to continue their seasons. Double technicals were accessed early in the first quarter, an intentional foul was called on a Campbellsville player, and Coach Richard Gatewood was slapped with a technical for jawing at a referee. There is nothing like the postseason. In the end, Taylor County rolled easily to a win, advancing to the 20th District Championship game and securing a spot in the 5th Region Tournament. Sophomore Quentin Goodin tallied 27 points, going 13 of 16 from the free throw line, grabbed 6 rebounds, and picked up 4 steals. Senior Caleb Wigginton dropped in 20 points, 9 rebounds and 5 steals and freshman David Sloan finished with 17 points, 6 assists and 5 steals. Junior Austin Webster chipped in  8 points and 10 rebounds. The Cardinals will face off against Adair County in a rematch of last year's championship on Saturday night at 7:00 EST in Marion County's Roby Dome as they look to repeat as District Champions.

Posted Feb 22/14 - Cardinals Fall in Season Finale Against Second-Ranked Hoptown

After two cancelled games agaisnt Fort Knox and Cumberland County were unable to be rescheduled, Coach Richard Gatewood made a rather bold move. He decided to schedule Hopkinsville, a team three hours away and with no losses against teams from Kentucky. The move was bold, but would pay dividends for the young Cardinals as they push towards the home stretch. Most expected the Cards to be blown out and thought that they were proven correct after seeing the scoreline, 80-62, but that was hardly the case. The Cardinal squad hustled and performed well, but were simply outmatched in speed and athleticism. Senior Caleb Wigginton totalled 25 points and 12 rebounds and sophomore Quentin Goodin tallied 21 points and 9 rebounds. Junior Austin Webster added 9 points and 9 rebounds while freshman David Sloan chipped in the remaining 7 of the Cards' 62 points. The Cardinals battled on the boards, pulling down 35 rebounds, but turnovers eventually doomed them as the team accumulated 17 total. Regardless, the matchup was a fantastic learning experience for the Cardinals and will better prepare them as they make runs at the District Championship and Region Championship. The Cards finish the regular season 23-6 and will play Campbellsville at 7:00 in Marion County in the first round of district on Wednesday, February 26th.

Posted Feb 10/14 - Cards Edge the Knights to Complete Perfect District Play

Going undefeated in the 20th district is something that rarely happens, which speaks volumes to the quality of basketball played in our area. The 2013-14 Taylor County Cardinals, however, were able to do just that. The Cards did not let the distinction of district perfection phase them, as they traveled to the Roby Dome and left with an important victory. The game was back and forth throughout and the Cardinals needed a dominant fourth-quarter to pullout the 93-86 win. It seemed as if all shots fell for both teams, but especially the Cardinals, who shot 72% from the field and 50% from three. The young Cardinal backcourt dominated the game, combining for 71 of the total 93 points. Sophomore Quentin Goodin totalled 31 points and 9 rebounds to go along with 4 steals and 3 assists. Freshman David Sloan added 20 points and 5 assists and freshman Ezra Oliver put in 20 points and 4 assists. The Cardinals needed maximum effort as Marion County put up a tremendous fight on their Homecoming Night, but the Cards ended the night victorious. With the win, the Cards boast a 6-0 district record (securing the number 1 seed for the district tournament) and 18-5 record overall.

Posted Jan 29/14 - Cards Pull Out Victory After Late Surge by the Indians

The Taylor County Cards were tested against district foes Adair County in a sloppy yet extremely contested match-up. Sitting a top of the district table, the Cards knew they were going to get all Adair County could throw at them and were able to pull out the victory, 62-57. The Cardinals had to overcome some adversity, committing 11 turnovers versus their 10 team assists and also only pulling down 25 team rebounds. Struggles from the field also plagued the Cards, as the team shot an average 45%, but were able to control most of the game against the Indians until a last frame dominated by Adair County made the game interesting. As Adair County pulled closer, the charity stripe turned out to be the friend of the Cardinals, as forward Austin Webster and guard Quentin Goodin nailed some clutch free throws down the stretch. Goodin led the way, with 21 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists while forward Caleb Wigginton added 16 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Posted Jan 15/14 - Cards Pick Up Sloppy Win Versus Green County

The January 14th edition of the Taylor County-Green County rivalry was nothing like the matchup on December 19th. Earlier in the season, the Cards defeated the Dragons handedly, 93-67, but the Dragons used the lopsided loss to fuel their fire for the second competition. The Cardinals came out sluggish and the Dragons took full advantage, leading for most of the game up until the Cards finally took control with 4 minutes left in the 4th quarter. Struggling with turnovers and shooting, the Cards did not look like the team that has donned the TC uniforms for the season. Guard Quentin Goodin was a bright spot in the ugly game, as he scored 26 points, handed out 8 assists, pulled down 6 rebounds, and picked 5 pockets. Guard David Sloan, who did not play in the previous matchup, scored 20 points, but struggled with 5 turnovers. Forward Caleb Wigginton was the only other double-digit scorer for the Cards, as he scored 12 points on just 6 shot attempts and secured 9 rebounds. The Cardinals will finish the week of play at North Hardin on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Posted Jan 3/14 - Cards Triumph Over Strong Region Foe Etown

Inclement weather almost cancelled the rescheduled game that featured the Cards against the Elizabethtown Panthers. Almost. The Cardinals did not allow poor weather conditions affect their play. Even matching up against Etown, a team ranked highly in the region and the state, did not distract the Cardinals from their goal of victory. After a heavily contested first half, that saw Cardinal starters Caleb Wigginton, Austin Webster, and Quentin Goodin struggle with foul trouble, the Cards trailed 28-27. In their place, the Cardinal bench provided a spark and held their own against most of the Elizabethtown starters. Also, the Cardinals welcomed freshman David Sloan back to action after an extended absence due to an ankle injury. After the intermission, Coach Gatewood's squad dominated the game until the final whistle. With a 46-point 2nd half, the Cards were able to push past Etown and secure a 12-point victory. Posted Dec 13/13 - Cards Use Huge 2nd and 3rd Frames to Blowout Crosstown Rivals

The first Battle of the Birds of the 2013-14 season ended in an 81-44 blowout of Campbellsville by the home Cards. Campbellsville controlled the tempo and made the game sloppy, resulting in a tie at 15 after the first quarter. With the start of the second quarter, Richard Gatewood's squad picked up the pace and jumped out to a sizable lead. The second quarter marked the return of forward Caleb Wigginton from injury and the senior did not disappoint. After scoring his first basket of the season off of a lay-up, Wigginton flushed away a missed lay-up on the fast break that changed the scope of the game. Using a 27-point second quarter and a 25-point third quarter, the Cardinals wrapped the game up quickly. Guards Quentin Goodin and Brady Turpin led the Cards in scoring with 16 apiece, while guard David Sloan contributed 15.  Wigginton scored 12 in his return and freshman Ezra Oliver also added 11, giving the Cards five double digit scorers. Turpin, however, stole the show as the senior guard came off the bench knocking down 4 of 5 from deep, assisting on 5 baskets, and stripping the ball 4 times. The 81-44 victory is the first win for Coach Richard Gatewood in the series. The Cardinals will continue district play tonight at Adair County at 8 ET.

Posted Dec 4/13 - Cards Dismantle Commanders in Season Opener

The new look Taylor County Cardinals boys basketball team opened up season play at home with a lop-sided victory against the visiting Commanders of Washington County. The Richard Gatewood regime began with a 79-21 win. Freshman David Sloan starred in his debut as the guard scored 19 points, collected 4 rebounds and dished out 4 assists. Sophomore guard Quentin Goodin chipped in 17 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds and 3 steals to go along with 3 thunderous dunks, one of which was an alley-oop from Sloan. Junior forward Austin Webster and sophomore forward Devin Rafferty gave excellent effort for the Cards. Webster shot 6 for 7 from the field and added 2 free throws for a total of 14 in addition to 7 rebounds while Rafferty scored 7 points, going a team-best 5 for 6 from the charity stripe, while also leading the team in rebounds with 10. Another freshman, Ezra Oliver scored 9 with 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals in his first game for the Cards. Senior guard Brady Turpin shot perfect for the night, going 1 for 1 from 3, 1 for 1 from the field, and 2 for 2 from the free throw line. Fan favorite, John "Chow" Chewning gave the fans their monies worth as he banged in the post and answered the call from the student section. The contest was hardly in doubt from the start, as Taylor County jumped on Washington County from the start, posting a 25-4 margin after the first quarter and 52-10 at the half. With under a minute left in the 1st half, Sloan scored 11 straight points in a span of 20 seconds to push the Cardinal halftime break to 42. This is the first step for a Cards team that has high aspirations for the season, especially once the squad returns senior Caleb Wigginton and sophomore Justice Gregory from injury. The Cards will close the week of play with a home game against region power Elizabethtown on Friday night at 7:30.
