Posted Dec 29/11 - Cap City Beats Defending Champion, Undefeated, DC Armour (CO)!

In the first round of bracket play Capital City found themselves matched up with a very talented team from Denver, Colorado. DC Armour had won the Winter National tournament last year and were well on their way to repeating (3-0 in pool play) until they ran into the Black Sox.

Travis Sanders turned in the performance of the tournament on the mound, striking out seven batters over the complete game effort, and only giving up 2ER.

Capital took the lead in the first inning when Clayton Gelfand led off the game with a hard single, later in the inning he was scored by a Sanders' single into shallow right field.

Nobody threatened again until the top of the fourth when Jackson Sipes and Tucker Hamilton hit back to back doubles to extend the lead to 3-0; but DC answered back in the bottom of the 4th with their first run of the game.

The game stayed scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when DC loaded up the bases with one out; the first run scored on a passed ball to make the score 3-2. The next batter grounded out to the pitcher, keeping the tying run at 3rd with two outs. Sanders struck out the next batter on three pitches to end the threat.

A lead off single in the 7th and two ground ball outs brought the game down to one at bat, with two outs and the tying run on third. Sanders flashed his brilliance on the mound once again; inducing a fly ball to Jared Bell in center field to cap off the biggest win in Capital City history and moving the Black Sox on to the second round.
