Posted Jan 3/14 - Cards Triumph Over Strong Region Foe Etown

Inclement weather almost cancelled the rescheduled game that featured the Cards against the Elizabethtown Panthers. Almost. The Cardinals did not allow poor weather conditions affect their play. Even matching up against Etown, a team ranked highly in the region and the state, did not distract the Cardinals from their goal of victory. After a heavily contested first half, that saw Cardinal starters Caleb Wigginton, Austin Webster, and Quentin Goodin struggle with foul trouble, the Cards trailed 28-27. In their place, the Cardinal bench provided a spark and held their own against most of the Elizabethtown starters. Also, the Cardinals welcomed freshman David Sloan back to action after an extended absence due to an ankle injury. After the intermission, Coach Gatewood's squad dominated the game until the final whistle. With a 46-point 2nd half, the Cards were able to push past Etown and secure a 12-point victory. In his return, Sloan led the Cards in scoring with 16 points along with a 5 assist and 0 turnover performance. Goodin added 15 points and 9 assists while Wigginton tallied 15 points and 7 rebounds. Webster totalled 8 points and 8 rebounds and the fifth Cardinal starter, Ezra Oliver, contributed 9 points and 4 assists. The Cardinals played extremely unselfish basketball, with 18 team assists as well as Wigginton and sophomore Devin Rafferty each taking a charge early in the 4th quarter. The 73-61 win is the best win of the season for the Cardinals and their performance backed up the hype surrounding the team. Saturday the Cardinals will travel to Lexington Catholic High School to compete against Lincoln County in the Goodfellas Pizzeria National Shootout at 8 p.m.
