Posted Jun 8/14 - Outlaws Scratch out 14-4 Win Over Edina
Mike Roth collected 3 hits including 3 run bomb and Jeff Appel was 3 for 3 with 3 RBI's.

The rains finally quit and the Outlaws were blessed with a beautiful Sunday for baseball as they traveled to St. Louis Park to take on the Edina Grays.

As the visiting ball club Ryan Meyer got things rolling for the Outlaws in the top of the first with two outs.  Meyer doubled to the opposite field with Mike Roth following with a single.  Ryan Carlson was then plunked to load the bases.  Jeff Appel then drove in Meyer and Roth with an RBI single to left field.  Outlaw rookie and newcomer Jeremy Krumwiede made his debut and opened up his Outlaws career with an RBI single driving in Carlson.    Not wanting to be left out of the 1st inning fun, Jason Beckett followed Krum with a 2 RBI double driving in Appel and Krumwiede.

With a 5-0 lead after a half inning the Outlaws gave the ball to their ace Jeff Miller.  Miller quickly set the Grays down in order in the 1st securing two of the outs by strikeout.

The Outlaws were held off the board in the 2nd inning after a 1 out single from Miller and a double from Sam Baumgartner.  They were both left stranded as the Grays hurler worked out of trouble.  Spanky pitched around 2 walks in the bottom of the second to keep the score at 5-0 through 2 innings.

A couple more base-runners for the Outlaw crew in the third, with Mike Roth continuing his blistering start to the 2014 season by leading off the inning with a single.  One batter later Jeff Appel added his second hit of the day with another line drive to left field.  Both runners would be left stranded however, as the Grays once again secured the next two outs and escaped without any further damage.

Miller was back to work in the home half of the third facing only 4 batters and adding two more strikeouts.

Sean Mangan got the rally going for the Outlaws in the 4th by leading off the inning with a base on balls.  Cory Van Briesen then laid down a text book sacrifice bunt to advance Mangan into scoring position.  One batter later Sam Baumgartner reached on an error.  Robb Larson then opened the flood gates with an RBI single.  Ryan Meyer quickly put another run on the sacks singling for his second hit of the day.  "Magic" Mike Roth then once again provided fireworks by driving a three run bomb over the left center field fence and putting the Outlaws out to a 10-0 lead.  The inning wasn't over though as Ryan Carlson started a new rally by following Roth's smash with a base hit.  A few pitches later with Jeff Appel back at the plate, Carlson moved into scoring position on a wild pitch.  Appel then turned a pitch around, lining his third hit of the day into center field with Carlson scoring on the play.   An 11-0 Outlaw lead would be the extent of the damage after three outs were recorded in the 4th.

Miller continued his shut out ways by once again keeping the grays at bay in the home half.  Jeffrey pitched around two Gray's hits and added one more strikeout, his 5th on the afternoon.

Jason Beckett wasted no time putting the Outlaws back in business in the top of the 5th by leading off with a base hit.  Two outs later Jeff Miller contributed his second hit of the day with a single.  Sammy "Bammy" Baumgartner then drove in Beckett with an RBI single, also Sammy's second whack of the day.  I see a trend developing here.....  Yep....Robb Larson was the next hitter and smashed a double off the fence in left field.  The double was also Robb's second hit on the day and it drove in two while extending the Outlaw lead to 14-0.

Jeff Miller gave way to Robb Larson in the bottom of the 5th.  Spanky finished the day pitching 4 shutout innings, striking out 5 while surrendering only 2 singles and walking three.

The Grays didn't roll over and quit as they tallied 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th before Sam Baumgartner came on in relief with the bases loaded and 1 out. What happened next led to an interesting ending to the day.  As Sammy pitched to his first batter, a pitch escaped Sean Mangan's mitt and rolled to the back stop.  Mangan's cat like reflexes allowed him to scamper back and scoop up the ball rather quickly.  Sean fed a strike to the plate covering Sammy, who tagged the Gray runner out at the plate for out number two.  Sammy then battled with the Gray batter and ended up walking him.  The Gray runner on third had a mental lapse and thought the bases were loaded, thus began jogging towards home.  After a lengthily run down one of the base runners was tagged out and the game was over.

With the 10-run rule shortened 14-4 victory, Jeff Miller and the Southwest Outlaws both improved to 3-0 on the season.

Mike Roth led all Outlaw hitters going 3 for 4 while driving in 3 on his home run.  Jeff Appel was perfect at the plate going 3 for 3 with 3 RBI's and scored a run.  Sam Baumgartner was 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored, Robb Larson was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI and a run scored, Ryan Meyer was 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored, Ryan Carlson was 1 for 2 with a single and got plunked while scoring 2 runs, Jeremy Krumwiede was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored, Jason Beckett was 2 for 3 with a single, a double, 2 RBI and a run scored, and Jeff Miller was 2 for 3 with 2 singles and a run scored, and Sean Mangan drew a base on balls and also scored....Phewwwwww....quite a day.

Next up for the Outlaws is a match up against Bloomington next Saturday at 2:00pm.  The game will take place at Kelly field in Bloomington.  The game is a division affair and promises to be a lot of fun.  See you there!!
