Posted Feb 18/13 - Team Avalanche Takes 2nd

This past weekend Team Avalanche participated in the TBS Super Regional in Pembroke Pines, Florida.

Team Avalanche faced the Miami Outlaws in game 1 of pool play and dominated them in a 6 inning 8-0 victory. Game 2 was a game the team was counting down to as they faced the Florida Battalion in a game to avenge an earlier season loss. Team Avalanche was victorious in a 9-4 victory that set up the team as the #1 seed for Sunday's bracket games.

The first game on Sunday was against the Junior Prospects of South Florida and behind outstanding pitching by Riley Kelton and an overpowering defense, Team Avalanche cruised to a run rule victory in 4 innings winning 16-2.

Next up was Team MVP, a perennial powerhouse out of Miami, who was one of the favorites to win it all this weekend. Team Avalanche brought out Joey Willis to face them on the mound. With the performance of his career and backed by the best defense in the 9U bracket, Hollywood unleashed his precision fastball and wicked curveball on Team MVP limiting them to 1 run. Team Avalanche scored 4 runs and won this tough battle 4-1 in 6 innings earning a berth in the championship game against South Florida Stealth, a team which battled a tough bracket to get to the championship game as well.

With the temperatures dropping and a cold wind blowing, the championship game got underway. Team Avalanche jumped to an early 2-0 lead after the 1st inning and quickly added 1 more run in the second, but the Stealth would not give up. They added 1 run in the 2nd making it a 3-1 game after 2.

In the top of the 3rd and 4th, Team Avalanche was shut out and the Stealth took full advantage adding 9 runs over the next 2 innings. On the verge of a run rule going into the top of the 5th, Team Avalanche couldn't find any holes as the Stealth shut down the Avalanche in the 5th again. Sensing the victory at hand, the Stealth loaded up the bases and drove in the winning run to earn the victory against Team Avalanche.

A runner-up finish at this tournament was a huge success for the team and now they set their sites on the Super NIT in Lake City the weekend of March 1.

Congratulations to Team Avalanche on a job well done and good luck in the next tournament.
