Posted Dec 30/10 - Coach Garth McKinney to conduct hitting clinic for Longhorn Hitters
Coach Garth McKinney was one of the most prolific sluggers in the history of Happy Valley High School (Elizabethton, TN) and Walters State Community College (Morristown, TN).  Coach McKinney was drafted in the 29th round of the 2001 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the Detroit Tigers.  He was invited to big league spring training with both the Tigers and the Toronto Blue Jays.  In 580 career minor league baseball games, Coach McKinney hit .250 with 93 home runs and 286 RBI.  Coach McKinney retired after the 2008 season at age 26.  He returned to his hometown and spent the 2009 high school baseball season as hitting coach and outfield coach for the Happy Valley Warriors.  He now gives hitting instruction at Diamond Sports Training Academy in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  This Saturday, January 1st, from 7:00-9:30 AM, Coach McKinney will be giving hitting instruction to Longhorn Hitters in our hitting tunnel.  January 1st is the first day we are allowed to open our hitting tunnel for our players to work on their swings.  We are excited about Coach McKinney coming up to give instruction as our players swing the sticks for the first time in preparation for the 2011 high school baseball season.
