Posted Apr 13/11 - Longhorns Lose To Patriots
The Johnson County Longhorns were trying to move to 5-3 in the Three Rivers Conference and get a huge middle of the season upset win over the Sullivan East Patriots.  It was not to be, as the Horns relief pitching had a bad day, in a 14-9 defeat.  Sawyer Ward, who continued his RBI tear, as he knocked in one on the day and had two hits, started on the mound for the Longhorns.  Ward struck out 7 in 3/2/3 innings.  His final line says he allowed 4 hits and gave up six runs, all earned, but he pitched much better than that.  In hindsight we probably should have left Sawyer in, as Sammy Hampton (4th inning) and Harley Reece (5th inning) struggled in relief.  Reece did hit his 3rd home run of the 2011 season, a solo shot in the bottom of the 3rd.  Left fielder, Andy Stout, had two doubles on three hits and knocked in two runs.  Shortstop, Judd Hammons, who was a game time decision with a groin injury, played his best offensive baseball game of the year.  Hammons had two hard base hits and knocked in two runs.  He also made a great diving play in the hole in the first inning.  First baseman, Austin Humphrey, knocked in a run with a long double.  He has been stinging the ball of late.  We showed a lot of heart by scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the 7th to make the final score respectable, but we did not pitch well enough to win.  We travel to Cloudland on Thursday to play two against the Highlanders.  Andy Stout will take the ball in game one for the Longhorns and Austin Humphrey will make his first career start in the second game.  First pitch for the first game is scheduled for 4:00.
