Posted May 9/11 - Longhorns Make It Through The Weekend With A Big Win Vs. North
The Johnson County Longhorns are making the most noise they have made in postseason play since the 2001 season.  After losing to the Sullivan North Raiders by the score of 5-4 on Friday night, Johnson County got some revenge on Sunday night, by eliminating the Raiders from the 2011 District 1 AA Tournament.  The Longhorns scored four runs in the top of the 1st on three hits.  First baseman, Austin Humphrey, had a 2-run single and starting centerfielder, Sammy Hampton, plated a run with a grounder to the shortstop that scored Sawyer Ward, who was hit by a pitch.  Harley Reece knocked in Humphrey with a single.  Left fielder, Andy Stout who had three hits in the game, started it all by leading off the game with a single.  Sawyer Ward received the start on the mound for the Longhorns and retired Sullivan North in order in the first, but the Raiders touched him up for 4 runs on 4 hits in the 2nd, to tie the game at 4.  Sammy Hampton earned the win for Johnson County as the starter on Saturday, but was pulled from that game after only throwing 65 pitches, because the Longhorns had a comfortable lead, in hopes that he would be available in relief if need be on Sunday.  That was indeed the case, as Hampton started the top of the 3rd inning on the hill for the Horns.  Sawyer Ward went to second base and junior, Chad Hodgkiss, who started at 2B, moved to right field, with starting right fielder, Jacob Henson, shifting over to centerfield.  Hampton did not allow Sullivan North to cross the plate during the 3rd, 4th, or 5th innings.  Johnson County broke the 4-4 tie on a Hampton double in top of the 5th.  Hampton scored Austin Humphrey, who reached with a single, because he was in motion, as Johnson County Head Coach, Pete Pavusek, had given Hampton and Humphrey the hit and run sign.  The Longhorns added 3 more runs in the top of the 6th.  Shortstop, Judd Hammons, led off the inning with a single.  After an out, Andy Stout doubled, advancing Hammons to third base.  Mark Jennings then scored Hammons, before a Sawyer Ward single to right field scored both Stout and Jennings, to make the score 8-4.  Sullivan North battled back in the bottom half of the 6th with 2 runs of their own to make the score 8-6, Johnson County.  The Horns gave Hampton some insurances runs in the top of the 7th, as they scored 2 runs.  Catcher, Danny Herman, hit a 380 feet opposite field home run to lead off the top of the inning.  It was Herman's 4th blast of the 2011 campaign.  After an out, Judd Hammons singled for the second time in the game and then scored on a ball the Sullivan North first baseman could not pick, which gave Johnson County 10 runs on the scoreboard.  Sammy Hampton struck out two Raider batters in the bottom of the 7th, including the last out of the game, to advance Johnson County through the weekend.  Hampton accomplished the unusual feat of winning a game as a starting pitcher and then coming back the next day and winning in relief.  We now play the Elizabethton Cyclones tonight, Monday, May 9th, at 6:00 in another elimination game.  The winner of tonight's game is guaranteed no worse than a 3rd place finish in the 2011 District 1 AA Tournament.  We hope to see you at Anglin Field.
