Posted Apr 29/12 - JV Longhorns Back To .500
The JCHS JV Longhorns evened their record at 8-8 on Saturday with a 7-3 win over the University High JV Junior Bucs.  Sam Thomas, who has been our best JV pitcher over the last several weeks, improved his record to 5-1 on the season.

*Thomas now has a season ERA of 2.42.  He pitched five shutout innings on Saturday, striking out six, only walking one batter, and giving up only three hits.  Sam also reached base three times on offense, drawing two walks and being hit by a pitch.

*Nate Plyler knocked in his team leading sixth and seventh runs of the season on a base hit, scoring designated hitter, Jon Vannoy, and courtesy runner, Judd Hammons (running for Thomas)

*First baseman, Jake Sutherland, his his first career triple in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring centerfielder, River Cazire.  It was Sutherland's sixth RBI of the season.

*Andy Woods, who started the game at third base (with Thomas on the mound), moved to right field (with Judd Hammons on the mound), and pitched (the final 2/3 inning), went 2-2, including an RBI sinlge that scored Thomas in the bottom of the fifth.  Woods has been one of our best offensive players since the April 9th game at Sullivan North.

The JV Longhorns will finish the 2012 season with 17 games played, which may be a school record for JV.  It will be the most JV games in the Pete Pavusek era.  A win on Thursday vs. the Cloudland Highlanders will give this JV club a winning record.  That is very impressive when you consider the details of our season.  Our original shortstop, River Cazire, was moved back to the outfield, his natural spot (eventually moving from LF to CF).  Our current shortstop, Adam Worley, is a true second baseman (the position he began the season playing).  Our current second baseman, Nathaniel Graybeal, has been an outfielder in his JCHS career, before moving to the IF this season.  Andy Woods, an outfielder, has filled in at third base when Sam Thomas has pitched.  Jon Vannoy has hit in the middle of the order all season, served as our designated hitter, played first base when Jake Sutherland pitched, and pitched himself, has not played since sixth grade.  Junior Judd Hammons, has threw bullpens to prepare for pitching in his JCHS career, but has not been called on to pitch often since Little League.  Freshman, R.J. Hassett, had not played organized baseball since third or fourth grade.  Only one of our freshmen (Harley Stout) played both years of JCMS Baseball.  We only have two guys hitting over .300 (Woods/Vannoy).  Our leading RBI guy, Nate Plyler, only has seven on the season, and our team ERA is 6.52.  I say all of that to say this, this is not a fancy team.  This is not a team that is going to wow anyone with statistics.  This is a team with players who have been wrote off!  This is a team with players that no one would have expected a lot from, but through guts, intensity, hard work, and team play, this 2012 JV Longhorn club has the abiliy to finish with a winning record; a record they should always be proud of!  A winning record would not be cheap, as we had big wins at Elizabethton (April 6th), behind a complete game, ten strikeout effort from Hammons, an April 9th win at Sullivan North, and an April 21st win vs. David Crockett.  As we look back on JV Longhorn Baseball we will always remember this team as one who came together as a group, united as a team, and gave everything they had!
