Ossining survives Suffern's comeback

OSSINING — With one quarter to play inside the Ossining gym Saturday afternoon, the emotions pulsated, only it was mostly from two dozen boys in black T-shirts behind the visiting bench.

 

 

One open layup or rainbow 3-pointer at a time, Suffern and its small but vocal crowd had slipped back into this Class AA opening-round boys basketball game, erasing most of Ossining's 15-point lead.

 

 

"We didn't expect to take it from 10 to 20 to 30," Ossining co-coach Khalid Sales said. "We thought they'd eventually make a comeback and we'd have to execute down the stretch."

 

 

In the end, they did just that, with Quincy Ingram providing the final statement with a two-handed dunk with five seconds left. It sealed Ossining's 76-71 victory over No. 9 Suffern and moved the No. 8 seed into a 5 p.m. quarterfinal on Tuesday at top-seeded New Rochelle.

 

 

Senior Ollie Lee Holmes scored seven of his 11 points in the final 10 minutes, right after the Mounties had cut their deficit to just three. Sophomore Keon Ervin scored a team-high 18, and Ingram, a junior, finished with 10 and a pair of dunks.

 

 

"Our coach just told me, run the offense, calm it down," Holmes said. "He said push it, but don't rush it. We have the lead, so don't rush it."

 

 

Holmes and his teammates heeded that call — barely.

 

 

Suffern began to cut into its deficit on a running 35-foot bank shot by DaShawn Woods that beat the buzzer. Woods had 23 points and 10 rebounds, combining with Alushula Odongo to punish Ossining inside in the third quarter. They combined for 19 of Suffern's 24 points in the quarter.

 

 

"I think we played a good game," said Odongo, who finished with 22 points. "We hustled and we put up a fight. We didn't just roll over and lose."

 

 

Finally, with 3:48 to play, the Mounties cut their deficit to 68-67 on one of five 3's from Vinny Crotty. The senior hit another with one minute remaining, leaving the score 73-71.

 

 

Ossining led by three when Suffern grabbed the rebound off a missed free throw and called time out with 16.8 to play. Coach George Kunzmann hoped to inbound the ball and run a play for Crotty, but his team turned the ball over before it had the chance.

 

 

"Off the inbound, we didn't get it to the right man. We wanted to get it into the backcourt and then run a play for Vinny Crotty," Kunzmann said. "It's OK. It was just one play in the game. There were a lot of other plays we could have made along the way, but it just didn't go our way."

 

 

Speaking of playing perfectly, that's the challenge ahead for Ossining in New Rochelle, which has yet to lose a Section 1 game this season.

     Suffern beats Pearl River, 55-41 behind 18 points from Odongo and Crotty

 

     SUFFERN -- Suffern had a major defensive goal in mind entering yesterday's game with Pearl River. 

     The Mounties wanted to neutralize Pearl River's offense, and to do that, they focused on junior point guard Luke Houston. 

     "We wanted to take Luke Houston out of the game," Suffern coach George Kunzmann said. 

     Suffern did this, thanks to Dashawn Woods, and it was a major factor in the Mounties recording a 55-41 win over the Pirates in the Conference IV second-place game. 

     Alushula Odongo had 18 points and 11 rebounds and Vince Crotty also scored 18 points, including four 3-pointers. 

     Suffern enters the Section 1 Championships with an 11-7 record. The seeding meeting will be held tomorrow, 9 a.m. at BOCES in Elmsford. 

     John Donovan led Pearl River with 14 points while Houston was held to a season-low two points. 

     "Dashawn (Woods) shut Houston down and the entire team played well defensively," Kunzmann said.

     Suffern had control of the game by halftime, leading 31-18. 

     The Mounties received a huge lift from their peers. The Suffern varsity hockey team was out in full force to support the basketball team. 

     "We had a big crowd because our entire hockey team brought a ton of fans with them," Kunzmann said. "That really helped us."

Crotty nails five 3-pointers, scores 18 points in Suffern win over Clarkstown South

     Mounties finish with three-game winning streak, take second place in the league

     WEST NYACK -- Vince Crotty scored 18 points, including five 3-pointers, and Alushula Odongo added 13 points and 11 rebounds as Suffern closed the season with its third consecutive win, 56-55 over Clarkstown South in a Conference IV American League game.

     Suffern (10-7 overall) finishes in second place in the league and will play either Tappan Zee or Nanuet in the second-place game at a time and site to be determined.

     Dashawn Woods scored nine points, but snared 12 rebounds, including six on the offensive glass. Marley Anthony had eight points and six rebounds.

     Zach Majer led Clarkstown South with a game-high 19 points and Mike McCahey added 11 points.

Anthony, Crotty, Odongo combined 50 points in Suffern win over Ramapo

     SUFFERN -- Marley Anthony had 18 points and eight rebounds and Vince Crotty scored 16 points and had eight assists as Suffern defeated Ramapo, 66-49 in a Conference IV American League game.

     Alushula Odongo also scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Mounties (9-7, 5-2 in the league).

     Suffern raced out to a 21-8 lead after the first quarter and was not in danger of losing the advantage. The Mounties close out the regular season at Clarkstown South tomorrow.

     Jonathan Grampus scored 16 points for Ramapo.

Second-quarter run sends Suffern to a 70-47 victory over Clarkstown North 

     Odongo has 18 points, 15 rebounds, Brennan adds 14 points.

      SUFFERN -- Late in the first quarter, Suffern coach George Kunzmann saw something that was alarming.

      Four Clarkstown North players were under its basket while only one Suffern player was battling. Kunzmann would immediately call a time out on the ensuing dead ball and discussed the recent situation with his team.

      The point Kunzmann made in the discussion got through for Suffern came out in the second quarter and took control, going on to a 70-47 Conference IV American League win.

      Alushula Odongo scored a game-high 18 points and finished with 15 rebounds and John Brennan scored 14 points for the second consecutive game as Suffern improved to 8-7 overall and 4-2 in the league. Suffern will host Ramapo tonight and finish the regular season at Clarkstown South Thursday.

      The Section 1 Boys Basketball Championship seeding meeting is scheduled for Sunday morning.
      "We just needed a little better effort," Kunzmann said. "We played and worked harder in the second quarter and we were able to get the ball inside a lot. Nagle also made a couple of 3-pointers in the first quarter so we made the adjustment and needed to get out on him."

      Brennan had his second consecutive solid shooting effort from beyond the arc, making four 3-pointers.

      "John has been shooting the ball very well the last couple of games," Kunzmann said. "He gave us a lift in the Pearl River game in the secoind quarter. A lot of teams have been playing zone against us to help out against our inside game. John has helped us out in this area with his shooting."

Odongo, Anthony combine for 35 points, 25 rebounds in Suffern win

      Woods leads 3rd-quarter run in 57-43 victory

      SUFFERN -- Suffern had settled down after a rough first quarter and went into halftime with the lead against R.C. Ketcham yesterday.

      When Suffern came out for the third quarter, the Mounties turned up the intensity against Ketcham's press and went after it.

      Suffern attacked the press, led by Dashawn Woods, enabling the Mounties to take control in a 57-43 victory.

      Alushula Odongo had 18 points and 12 rebounds, including six offensive, and Marley Anthony added 17 points and 13 rebounds. Woods scored all nine of his points in the third quarter as Suffern outscored Ketcham, 21-12, raising its lead to 14 points through three.

      "We came out a little slow in the first quarter because of a little pressure from them," Suffern coach George Kunzmann said. "In the second quarter, we settled down, played smart and made some plays."

      Kunzmann spoke to his team at halftime about being aggressive against Ketcham's press and that is what the Mounties did in the third quarter.

      "They continued to press a little, but we made the adjustment," Kunzmann said. "We attacked the basket. Dashawn is a good penetrator. He was gettting the ball just beyond half court and took it to the basket. Dashawn came out energetic and that sparked us."

     Suffern also had a decided advantage at the free-throw line. The Mounties converted 18 of 24 free throws, including 8 of 10 from Odongo, while Ketcham was only 7 of 12.

     Anthony had another excellent game and has been a consistent double-double producer. With teams focusing on containing Odongo, Anthony has shown that he is now garnering more defensive attention.

     "Marley is very strong and very determined inside," Kunzmann said. "He is attacking the offensive glass and he is finishing his shots."

Anthony scores 19 in Suffern loss to Monroe-Woodbury

 

     MONROE -- Marley Anthony scored 19 points and Alushula Odongo added 11 points, but it was Monroe-Woobury which came away with a 50-41 win over Suffern in a non-league game.

     It was the second time in the last three games that Anthony scored 19 points.

Anthony leads Suffern to third consecutive win

     SUFFERN -- One game after a huge double-double, Suffern's  Marley Anthony was at it again.

     Anthony scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Suffern ran its winning streak to four games with a 57-41 victory over Clarkstown North in a Conference IV National League game.

     In Suffern's previous game, Anthony had 11 points and 12 rebounds, including 10 off the offensive glass. Anthony had five offensive caroms today.

     Alushula Odongo added 11 points and Vince Crotty had 10 points for Suffern (6-4).

     Crotty on fire in Suffern's 67-32 win over Clarkstown South

     SUFFERN -- Vince Crotty came out shooting and kept finding the bottom of the net.

    Crotty scored 15, all 3-pointers, of his game-high 21 points in the first quarter, sending Suffern to a 67-32 win over Clarkstown South in a Conference IV American League game.

    As a result of Crotty's hot hand, Suffern led by six after the first quarter. Suffern came out in the second half and defensively, clamped down on the Vikings, limiting them to just seven points.

    Alushula Odongo had 12 points and Anthony Marley added 11 points and 12 rebounds, including 10 on the offensive glass.

    Mike McCahey led Clarkstown South with 14 points. Suffern held Vikings' leading scorer Zach Mager to a season-low five points.

Odongo nets game-high 27 points in Suffern win over Ramapo

 

SUFFERN -- Alushula Odongo scored 16 of his game-high 27 points in the third quarter yesterday, propelling Suffern to a 67-52 Conference IV American League win over Ramapo.

     Ramapo led by one at halftime, 25-24, before Odongo and the Mounties erupted in the third quarter. Odongo made eight field goals as the Mounties outscored the Gryphons by 12 points.

     Vince Crotty contributed 12 points and Anthony Marley added 10 points for Suffern (4-4).

     David Haye led Ramapo with 18 points and Sheldon Raphael had 10 points.

Crotty has seven 3-pointers in Suffern win over Nyack

 

     SUFFERN -- Vincent Crotty was in a zone so Suffern kept looking for him.

    Crotty was in a 3-point shooting zone as he made seven of 12 from beyond the arc, leading Suffern to a 61-52 victory over Nyack.

    Crotty finished with a game-high 23 points. Dashawn Woods had 13 points and nine rebounds and Alshula Ondongo added 11 points.

    Kivar Thurman led Nyack with 16 points and Ray Nichols contributed 12 points.
