Countdown to ???
(May 25/07)
3/17/07: St. Patrick's Day brings out the luck of the favorites, as (1) Ohio State, (3) Pittsburgh, and (2) UCLA had to keep up their A-game for the entire game. In the early afternoon, ninth-seeded Xavier was downed in overtime by the Buckeyes, after Ron Lewis hit a game-tying three with 2 seconds to go in regulation, and Mike Conley Jr. took over in the extra session. This game also hushed the critics about Ohio State's chances without Greg Oden, as the Buckeyes' big man had fouled out before overtime began. In the West Region, eleven-seed Virginia Commonwealth, coming off of a huge win vs. #6 Duke, came up just short against Aaron Gray & Co.'s Pittsburgh Panthers in OT, 84-79. Although not an overtime game, (7) Indiana and UCLA sure gave the fans in Sacramento their money's worth. UCLA ended up with a Sweet Sixteen berth, but not before Kelvin Sampson's Hoosiers took the Bruins down to the final minute. Lance Stemler came up huge for Indiana, hitting two key free throws at the end of the game with 1:14 to go in the game, and then Earl Calloway hit a layup in the lane to tie up the game; however, in the 73 seconds that followed, the Bruins took over, scoring 5 more points (all of which came from the charity stripe).

3/18/07: The school named for an Egyptian hunting dog is now hunting down a dream of the Elite Eight. Before today, nobody really knew what damage Southern Illinois could do. After today, we could be talking about a team with potential to go past the Sweet Sixteen. The Salukis steamrolled Virginia Tech today in the second round, 63-48, and Jamal Tatum was six-for-nine from three-point range, en route to his team-high 21 points. Up next for SIU are the Kansas Jayhawks, who have already beaten Niagra and Kentucky. The Salukis should prove to be a challenge for Brandon Rush and Co., especially if Tatum stays hot. If Southern Illinois can keep up their winning ways, they might not get to the Pyramids, but they could land a spot in Atlanta.
