Maroons Open District with a Tie
Posted January 30, 2014
The Maroons opened up district play against Lake Travis at House Park on Wednesday. The theme for the night was defense as both the JV and the Varsity held the Cavs without a goal. JV ended 70 minutes of play with a 0-0 tie. After 80 minutes the Varsity score was also the same, with both teams unable to find the back of the net. The Varsity defense of Justina Lange, Jenny Stevens and Hailey Heal held off a fast start by the ladies in red, and goalkeeper Georgie Ferguson made stop after stop dashing the hopes of Lake Travis on taking an early lead. After 20 mintutes the Maroons started to mount an attack that found balls missing by just inches to finding the back of the net. The second half was much the same as the Maroons and Cavs traded shot after shot. Justina Lange nearly put the Maroons on the board with a brilliant header off of a perfectly placed Madison Tumicki corner kick, but the shot sailed inches wide. With the game scoreless at the end of regulation, the game would be decided with penalty kicks. At the end of five shooters, the Cavs had the advantage over the Maroons 5-3.
Both JV and Varsity did an amazing job in their first district match up and take the field again next Tuesday at Burger Stadium vs. Bowie. Game times are 6/7:45.
