Bird Island defeats Ada in the first round of the State Tournament

The Bird Island Bullfrogs won their opening round game of the 2012 State Amateur Baseball Tournament by defeating the Ada A’s 6-1 on Saturday night.

The Bullfrogs jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the third inning. Three consecutive singles and aggressive base running by Ben Maiers, Dylan Gass and Shawn Dollerschell, set the tone to the entire ballgame.

The Frogs added another run in 5^th when Gass singled with two outs. He advanced to an error on a ball hit by Dollerschell and scored on a single by Tyler Hebrink.

That’s all the run support Bird Island starting pitcher Jesse Bjur needed as he handcuffed the Ada batters, as he pitched 7 shutout innings, while striking out 5 batters. A rain delay after the 7^th inning ended Bjur’s night. But drafted pitcher Matt Geislinger from Watkins pitched the final two innings, allowing one run on 2 hits.

The Frogs added three more insurance runs in the 9^th to seal the win. Dollerschell, Hebrink, Mark Neubauer and Luke Kramer all singled in the inning.

At the plate: Tyler Hebrink went 3-4 with a double and an RBI, Mark Neubauer went 2-3 with an RBI, Shawn Dollerschell went 2-4 with an RBI, Dylan Gass went 2-5, and Luke Kramer and Ben Maiers each had one hit.

With the win, the Bird Island advances to take on St Patrick on Sunday, August 26^th and 1:30 PM, in St Cloud.
