Midget Royals Crowned Champions of Aldergrove AAA Showdown Tournament

Posted May 18, 2015

On Monday the Ridge Meadows Midget AAA Royals won the inaugural Aldergrove AAA Showdown Tournament, beating the host team Aldergrove Dodgers in the championship game.

The tournament began on Thursday with the Royals taking on the Coquitlam A's.  The Royals bats came out white-hot as they scorched the A's pitching for 19 runs in a 5-inning mercy final of 19-0.  Santiago Torres led the way offensively for the Royals, going 3 for 4 at the plate including a 2-run triple.

On Saturday the Royals continued to swing the bat well as they improved to 2-0 in the tournament with a 12-3 win over the South Fraser Giants.  Jaden Shanley went 3 for 3 with 4 runs batted in, 3 runs scored, and a walk.  In their second game of the day, the Royals beat the host team, Aldergrove Dodgers, by a score of 8-1.  Trevor Reed pitched six strong innings for the Royals, while Seth Injates hit a lead-off home run to get the offence going.

With a spot in the semi-final already secured, the Royals tied their final round robin game against the Cowichan Valley Mustangs, with the game ending in a score of 1-1.  Domenic Baptista threw six shutout innings and had seven strikeouts on the mound.

On Monday the Royals faced off against the Whalley Warriors in the semi-final.  The team continued their strong hitting, ending the game in a 5-inning mercy with an 11-1 win.  Tristan Reed went 2 for 4 at the plate with 3 runs batted in and 2 runs scored.

In the tournament final, the Royals again battled the host team from Aldergrove.  The Royals jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but Aldergrove clawed back to take a 6-5 lead in the sixth inning.  However, as they had done all weekend, the Royal's bats continued to shine as they battled back to earn a 9-6 win and the tournament title.  Chris Bailey started on the hill for the Royals, and Trevor Reed came in to earn the save.

It was a great weekend of baseball for the Royals, as they went undefeated (5-0-1) en route to the championship.  Seth Injates was named the tournament MVP, as not only did he win two games on the mound (8 innings, no earned runs, 10 strikeouts), but he also helped pace the offence, going 9 for 14 with a double, a home run, 4 runs batted in, and 4 stolen bases.  Jaden Shanley finished the tournament going 10 for 16 with a double, a home run, and 8 runs batted in.  Nick Peters led the team with 9 runs batted in for the tournament.  As a team, the Royals batted .396 for the tournament and allowed a total of 12 runs in 6 games.
