Game
Notes:
Opening up Elimination Play, the 0-2 Athletes took on East County White Sox, who were 2-0.
Suddenly the bats came alive, and after one inning, AC led 5-3, as Lars Ertolacci, Austin Wegdahl, Sean Atkins, Alex Lovingfoss and Nolan Burnett (replacing Nam Le, who was at a church function), all scored.. An inning later, it was 6-3 when Zac McDonald crossed the plate.
In the 3rd, Branick Herold, Wegdahl and Atkins all scored, and Indian countered with a singleton. So after 3 innings, it was AC 9, EC-I 4.
In the 4th, Wegdahl, Atkins and Herold scored again, and EC-I sputtered. 12-4 Athletes!
Not accustomed to being out hit, out pitched, out fielded and out coached by a team coming out of pool play with an 0-2 record, several Indians' coaches played Lou Piniella, with shouting and carrying on that embarrassed even their players. Every forceout or tag out was cause for abuse of the umpires.
Feigned or not, these tactics were associated with a dramatic turnabout in the game, as AC bats fell silent and the Indians tallied 4 in the 5th, 3 in the 6th and one in the bottom of the 7th to tie the game, which by now had gone on for over 3 hours).
At this point, the umpires called the game, and awarded victory to AC on the grounds that a "tie" game reverted to the score at the previously completed inning. Joy in Mudville lasted 10 minutes until an East County League Official ruled that the tie should be broken by rules governing ties in pool play, that is, that the "advancing team" should be the one with the best pool play record or the fewest runs allowed, both of which favored EC. However, when AC coaches pointed out that the final rule of the printed list was "Umpires' Decisions are Final," the League decided to let the two teams settle things on the field. The followup semi final game was halted, dugouts were re-occupied by Athletes and Indians, and the 8th inning began.
Oddly enough, the last batter for each team in the 7th inning was the last batter on the scorecard, so it was like starting a new "sudden death" game.
Athletes Corner responded by scoring 4 runs as the first 6 batters hit safely. Reliever Austin Wegdahl shut down the first three Indians batters, to end the game.
