Eastview (24-12-1) won its opening pool play game of the Gopher State Tournament 10-3 over division rival St Anthony. It was the Lightning's first win over the Huskies on the season in its third attempt. With the win, Eastview has won 10 of their last 12 as they head into a big matchup against EP Black. The Eagles are rated 6th in the tournament and already defeated the Lightning 14-0 in May. The winner of that game will claim champion of the pool. Eastview showed patience at the plate (10 walks), found timely hits (7 hits), and ran the basses aggressively (12 steals). Smith (RS, 2 SB) & Grimm (2 RS, 3 SB) each had two hits. Herro (2 RS, SB) reached base three times with two walks and a single. Matt "Hollywood" Smith returned to the mound after a few rough outings to shut down the St Anthony offense. Smith went 6 strong (2 BB, 1 K), scattering 3 hits, while giving up a lone unearned run in the 3rd inning. He attacked the zone by getting strike one on a lot of Husky batters. Chris Ferber was scheduled to start the next game against EP Black, but he woke up feeling ill and is going to get it checked out at the urgent care. Also questionable is the return of leading hitter Jack Buck. In Ferber's absence, Scott Perlenfein (6-3, 2.40) will take the ball. Game time is set for 1230pm.
