Game Notes: Perlenfein & Furnstahl (5)

Eastview (23-12-1) won its league quarterfinal match-up against Rochester by a 5-3 score. Before the game, the Rochester coach voiced concern for their next game in the semifinals being on Tuesday and not wanting to play back-to-back for the championship. Looks like the coach was looking a little too far ahead because the Lightning went into their yard and took care of business. With the win, Eastview has won 9 of their past 11 games, all while not playing anywhere near their best baseball. The Lightning jumped out to an early lead in the 2nd after two walks and a double steal led to runners being on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. Herro (1B, 2 RBI) hit a grounder to second to drive in the first run and advancing the other to third base. Following a walk to Foy, Eastview sent Foy early from first, getting him in a rundown allowing the second run to score. In the 4th, Grimm (3 RS, 3 SB) led off the inning with a single and stole second. With two outs and Grimm at third, Herro came up with a clutch 2-out run-scoring single to make it 3-0. The defense was spectacular for 6 of the 7 innings, but the Royals jumped on three Lightning errors and two walks to tie the score at 3's. Perlenfein (0 ER, K) gave up all three runs, scattering 5 hits and walking 2. Furnstahl came into a bases loaded, 2-out jam and got the hitter to fly to center to keep the score tied. Eastview gave Furnstahl a lead right away with another leadoff walk and stolen base by Grimm. After a single and stolen base, it was 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs as Eastview sent their leading hitter Jack Buck to the plate, who had to pull himself from the lineup a couple minutes before the game with a sore back. Buck worked the count full and smashed a grounder to short who struggled getting a good grip and ended up throwing it over the first baseman's head. The Royals battled back as they had the tying run on 2nd base with 2 outs but Furnstahl (W, 3 H, 0 BB, 0 R, 1 K) got a grounder to short to secure the victory. The story of the game was the bottom of the order moving guys around and coming up with clutch hits. The top 2 in Eastview's order went 0-8 with 4 K's. Eastview has advanced to the semifinals in the league playoffs as they will travel to Lakeville to face the Panthers from Lakeville North. Lakeville is the 2nd seed in playoffs as they went 14-2 in their division, giving up the second least runs of all 43 MBL teams. The teams have faced each other this season as the Lightning claimed victory 8-7 in a tight matchup in the Apple Valley Tournament.

However, before looking too far ahead (like Rochester's coach), the Lightning play in this weekend's Gopher State Tournament of Champions. They have Friday night off but come back with a tough Saturday schedule. They begin pool play at 8am against St Anthony, who they hold an 0-2 record against. St Anthony has won by scores of 6-4 and 4-3 so the Lightning should be hungry for a win. Closing out pool play, Eastview faces EP Black, who defeated the Lightning 14-0 in the Apple Valley Tournament. The Lightning showed up to that game unfocused from the beginning and did not have any energy. Following those two pool play games, will be the first round of bracket play. The only way to guarantee being in the Championship Bracket is by going 2-0 in the pool. Against St Anthony, Matt Smith (3-3, 2.63) will take the ball as Chris Ferber (5-0, 2.69) will against EP Black. Game times are set for 8am and 1230pm, respectively, at the White Bear Township fields.

Furnstahl (W, 5-3)
