Game Notes: Thursday evening the Duncan Bantam AA Red Sox welcomed the Ladysmith Cannons to Preston Bruce Field for their final regular season meeting. Duncan was looking to avenge a lopsided 11-0 loss the last time these two clubs met. Ladysmith put pressure on Duncan’s starting pitcher DJ Govenlock in the first inning by scoring 2 runs, the damage could have been much worse as Ladysmith had two runners on base when second baseman Connor Steacy snagged a line drive to end the inning. Duncan countered with one run in the bottom of the inning after lead off batter Steacy walked, stole second and was driven in by Jordan Bell; Duncan’s clean up hitter. Govenlock settled down in the top of the second, retiring the side in order. Ladysmith’s hard throwing starting pitcher Brady Corrigan struck out three in a row in the bottom half of the inning. Govenlock was replaced by Cody Elzinga in the top of the third but again Ladysmith only sent the minimum number of batters to the plate due to some solid defensive plays by the Duncan infield and the great pitching by Elzinga. As the game went on it started to look like this could be a classic pitchers duel. The game remained 2-1 for Ladysmith until the bottom half of the fifth inning when, after striking out Duncan’s lead off batter, a tiring Corrigan walked Steacy and centerfielder Dean Robin. The Red Sox then caught a break when left fielder Dan Draper tried to move up the runners with a sacrifice bunt. While attempting a double play at second base the ball was thrown wildly into center field allowing both speedy runners to cross the plate and Draper to move to second base. The game started to fall apart for the Cannons from there, Corrigan struck out Bell only to have his catcher miss the low pitch allowing Bell to reach first base on the error and Draper to score. Corrigan struck out Govenlock but a walk to Elzinga ended his day on the mound. The Sox scored two more runs in the inning with Bell driven in by a hard ground ball single from Spence O’Flaherty and Elzinga scored on an error by the Ladysmith leftfielder on a high fly ball from Mike Beaveridge. Duncan held Ladysmith scoreless in the top of the sixth as Elzinga continued to induce ground balls and the Sox defense fielded everything that came their way. The Red Sox bats came alive in the bottom of the inning with four consecutive hits, singles from Robin and Draper, a double by Bell and a towering triple by Govenlock. Beaveridge stepped up to the plate, after a walk to O’Flaherty and smacked another triple to deep left field and eventually scored on a wild pitch. When the dust settled the Sox had a 12-2 lead and the game was called under the mercy rule.
Player of the game honours went to Cody Elzinga who pitched four shutout innings to pick up the win. Manager Randy Pellerin was very happy with the defensive play of his team stating, “We only committed one error in the game out of twenty defensive chances. This was definitely our best defensive game of the year.”
Duncan goes on the road for their next three games returning for a playoff game Saturday June 16th against Triangle.
