Game
Notes:
An inability to pitch or hit in the clutch, allowed #2 Marquette to escape with a 3-2 Regional Finals victory over the Popes. Peter Behnke baffled the Hilltoppers, scattering 3 hits over the first 4, and handing over a 1-0 lead to Kevin Robinson to start the fifth. Robinson was not the answer as he walked 1 and hit a batter, combined with two hits and a wild pitch turned the lead into a 3-1 deficit. The Popes added a run in the 6th thanks to 2 Marquette errors but the inability to hit with runners on, halted what could have been a big inning. For the game the Pius hitters stranded 8 runners in scoring position, including leaving the bases full in the 4th and leaving runners on second and third with 1 out in the 5th. Dave Van Rixel continued his torrid streak with a 2-3 night and a run driven in. Joe Schreck and Ryan Pogodzinkski added two singles apiece to the 8 hit attack. The game ended the Popes season at 13-18 and marked the end of their high school careers, and baseball in general, for all but a few of the 11 seniors. Here is list of the seniors and where they will be attending college and if they will be playing baseball.

The game also marked the end of an era for assistant coaches Kevin Kowalke and Randy O'Connell. Kevin is taking on new responsibilities off the field and Randy is retiring to the northern part of our great state where the beer is cold and the fish are always bitin' Good luck to these two fine coaches, they will be missed.
The future looks bright for the Popes as the JV finished second in the Classic 8. With the return of starters Kevin Doerr, Ryan Pogodzinkski, Greg Grocholski, Nick Majeske, and Alex Kosinski, and with the emergence of Peter Behnke, Steve Lenski, and Scott Perry at the varsity level, the future looks bright indeed.
