Game
Notes:
Cheered on by receipt of a $12.5M State grant to expand its facilities, the Columbia Theatre Babe Ruth team played one of its top games of the season in defeating Athletes Corner 11-1 at Roy Morse Field on Monday, in a game called after 5 frames.
In the first inning, AC was excited, as Austin Wegdahl launched a single into left field and Sean Atkins laced a lazer into the right field corner for a triple. Wegdahl scored easily, and with power hitting Taylor Beck coming to bat, AC's dugout was cheering in expectation of a big thump from their 5'11 240 pound mountain of muscle. Recalling previous matchups against Mr. Beck, CT starter Braydon Poole
issued a walk.
When Beck stole second, things were looking up for AC, but Poole settled and retired the next two batters on stikeouts, Noting a first inning pitch count of nearly 30, AC was hopeful that their careful approach would tire out the ace of the CT staff.
In the bottom of the first, AC starter Sean Atkins yielded a bloop single to power hitting Josh Sorenson, but then experienced major difficulties with a strike zone that seemed to move with the gusting Westerly wind at the ball park. Atkins' knuckleball was frequently an inch outside and his fastballs were just ever so slightly high, creating adverse 2-0, and 3-1 counts. Forced to come in with pitches down the middle in order to avoid walking hitters, he was greeted on numerous occasions by hitters eager to hit line drives into left or center, and an occasional high drive into the gap. In addition, it seemed that every matchable ball was taken out of reach by the wind, either left or right, or up or back.
As the score mounted, Poole pitched with even greater confidence, and found the edges of the strike zone that Atkins was barely missing. Six times, AC batters struck out looking at pitches they felt were balls. Only Beck and Branick Herold, with bloop singles, managed to solve Poole's
array of fastballs and curves. Nam Le stole second after being hit by a pitch.
AC starting left fielder Alex Lovingfoss was lost for at least a week due to aggravation of a painful pulled quadraceps muscle suffered in PE class last week. Zac McDonald, nursing a bruised left wrist, batted left handed
for the first time in his career, fouling off several tough pitches from Poole before watching a curveball nick the outside corner for strike 3.
