Posted Apr 28/15 - Jacks survive Best's near no-no

Immediately after Spencer Best threw his final pitch of the game, a ball, Mark Morris coach Brice Richards clapped his hands loudly and began the long, slow walk to the mound.

There were two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Best was working on a no-hitter, the Monarchs clinging to a 1-0 lead with a runner on first base.

“I saw him walk out of the dugout, and I’m like, ‘No coach, no,’” Best said. “I want one more.”

But Best’s day was done. The R.A. Long runner on first base, Tanner Hulings, promptly stole second. Then Kaden Vanderwerf lined a single up the middle off Riku Kusakabe to break up the no-no and tie the score.

It all ended in a flurry — two MM throwing errors in the span of five pitches, the last one skittering past first baseman James Manthe as Vanderwerf raced home from third base to give the Lumberjacks a miraculous 2-1 walk-off win over the rival Monarchs.

“Things just weren’t going our way at first,” Vanderwerf said. “And then all of a sudden, they did.”

Best threw 105 pitches and didn’t allow a hit in 6 2/3 innings, striking out four and walking two. His opposite number, Gunnar Blix, was at least his equal, allowing zero earned runs and two hits while striking out 10 in a complete-game win.

After suffering a doubleheader sweep to Hudson’s Bay last Friday, RAL (5-4 in league, 6-8) desperately needed a win to maintain its place in the thick of the Greater St. Helens 2A League playoff chase.

The Monarchs (3-5 in league, 7-8), meanwhile, find themselves in precarious straits.

“It’s tough to lose a game like that,” Richards said. “You just tip your hat. And now we’re against the wall — we’ve got to win every game this week.”

For Best, this start couldn’t have gone more differently from his last. On April 17, he was lifted after allowing four runs in 2/3 of an inning against Woodland.

The senior had been eager to get the bad taste out of his mouth.

“Since that Woodland game, it’s been on my mind to start another one,” he said. “I’m glad my coaches had faith to put me out here against a pretty good ballteam.

“I couldn’t get that last guy, but that’s baseball.”

Best ran into his most difficult inning in the bottom of the first, when the Lumberjacks loaded the bases with no outs on two errors and a hit-by-pitch.

“I’m just like, man, ‘Don’t let this be like the Woodland game all over again,’ “ Best said.

But he settled down. He retired the next three batters, then seven more in a row to cruise into the fourth inning.

The Monarchs picked up their only run in the top of the second. Devin St. Jean drew a leadoff walk, stole second, and then came all the way around to score on a throwing error to make it a 1-0 game.

Other than that, Blix was nearly flawless. He allowed a single to Max Leach in the top of the fourth and an infield hit by Devin St. Jean to lead off the seventh, but only one runner reached second base after the second inning.

“He was absolutely huge,” RAL coach Mark Hulings said. “We put our spurs in Gunnar today, and he pretty much carried us.”

After RAL got two baserunners in the fourth with an error and a walk, Best retired another 10 in a row.

But with two outs in the seventh, he walked Tanner Hulings on four pitches. When ball one to Vanderwerf sailed high, Richards made the move to Kusakabe.

“Unfortunately, I thought he was getting a little tired out there,” Richards said. “He was at 105 pitches in 80-degree weather. He was calling timeout on his own to catch his breath.

“We should be able to get one out.”

In the end, it was MM’s five errors in the field that doomed the Monarchs — and RAL’s refusal to quit that saved the Jacks.

“One hit, and we won a ballgame,” Coach Hulings said. “How many times does that happen?”

Posted Mar 27/15 - Pitchers star as RAL, Rainier split doubleheader

It all fell apart quickly....One moment, the R.A. Long and Rainier baseball teams were in a scoreless tie going to the seventh inning. After three RAL errors in rapid succession, the Columbians escaped with a 2-0 win despite mustering only one hit all game.

“We got a couple lucky breaks there in the seventh. That’s baseball,” Rainier coach Jacob Green said. “You wait for those breaks to come.”

Twenty minutes later on a drop-dead gorgeous afternoon at the Lumberyard, the two teams played again. And this time for RAL, it all came together.

Two weeks of pent-up frustration was exorcised by four hits and four runs in the bottom of the first. With Brett Coons throwing fireballs on the mound — the burly sophomore tossed five no-hit innings in his first varsity start — the Jacks cruised from there to a 6-2 victory.

“The first game, our bats didn’t come alive,” said Spencer Thorsen, who went 2 for 3 in Game 2 and scored a pair of runs. “But the second game, we caught fire.”

Both the Jacks (1-4) and the Columbians (1-4) picked up their first wins of the season Thursday afternoon.

The split left both coaches with mixed feelings, but the overwhelming one was happiness about finally getting over the hump.

“We’ve been waiting, waiting,” RAL coach Mark Hulings said. “I know they’re frustrated. We’ve had really close ballgames . … We’re just looking for a breakthrough.”

It took a couple hours longer than Hulings would have liked for his Jacks to get on the board, however, thanks to the pitching of Rainier’s Tim Seybert and Mason Schimmel.

Seybert started the first game of the day and allowed one hit over four innings. Schimmel kept it up in the final three frames, retiring RAL in order in the bottom of the seventh after the Columbians finally seized the lead.

“All year, they’ve been solid,” Green said of the pair. “They went out and did exactly what I expected them to do.”

Seybert and Schimmel’s effort was nearly wasted, however. Rainier’s offense was impotent, recording 15 of its first 18 outs via strikeout and failing to push a runner past second base until the seventh inning.

Much of that, of course, had to do with RAL’s own stellar arms. The Game 1 starter was freshman Andrew Walling, who allowed just one hit and struck out 12 in five innings.

“His presence on the bump is impressive right now,” Hulings said. “We feel really comfortable with him.”

With Thorsen on the mound in the seventh, however, RAL’s usually tight defense turned porous.

A line drive hit the center fielder’s glove and fell to the grass. A bobbled ball while trying to turn a double play resulted in no outs at all.

And, finally, Casey Tripp’s ground ball up the middle skittered past shortstop Gunnar Blix and into the outfield, allowing the decisive two runs to score.

“We have to be able to find ways to win,” Green said. “We put the ball in play, and when you do that it puts pressure on them to make plays.”

The second game began with a bang.

After Coons set the Columbians down in order in the top of the first, the Jacks strung together a walk and four singles to create four runs in their half of the inning.

The Jacks scored two more in the second inning on an RBI single by Thorsen and a booming double to left-center from Blix.

Coons, meanwhile, kept on dealing, facing only one batter above the minimum through five frames and striking out five on 73 pitches.

“He wanted another inning,” Hulings said. “But we just went with our pitch count.”

Freshmen Mikael Elliott and Alex Brady came on to finish the job in each of their respective first varsity appearances on the mound.

Elliott got into a bit of trouble in the sixth, loading the bases before allowing a two-run single by Jeff Tripp, but he settled down before much damage was done.

In all, RAL’s four underclassmen pitchers allowed two hits, no runs and struck out 19 in 12 innings of work Thursday.

Keep that up, and the Jacks won’t have to wait two weeks before they win again.

“We are a young team, we know that,” Hulings said. “So we’ll just keep getting them opportunities. We liked what we saw out of those guys.”

Posted Mar 26/15 - W.F. West 3, R.A. Long 2

A two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth inning pushed the Bearcats past the Lumberjacks in nonleague action Tuesday at Chehalis. Kaden Vanderwerf was cruising along with two-plus innings of scoreless relief when W.F. West put together a rally that turned a one-run deficit into a 3-2 lead that held up. “They flexed their muscles at just the right time,” RAL coach Mark Hulings said. The WFW comeback spoiled an otherwise solid outing for Vanderwerf and starter Gunnar Blix. Vanderwerf struck out three and walked none with six hits allowed in three innings of work, while Blix gave up just one hit and one run with two strikeouts in his three innings on the bump. Andrew Walling drove in both of RAL’s runs with a pair of doubles. “We’re hanging in there, we’re battling,” said Hulings, whose team also lost a one-run game to Kelso last week. “We’re just good enough to lose right now.” RAL (0-3) hosts Rainier on Thursday in a possible doubleheader.

R.A. Long (2A)

Head coach: Mark Hulings (3rd season)

Last season: 7-5 in GSHL 2A (3rd), 12-10 overall; eliminated at districts

Returning starters: *Spencer Thorsen (sr., SS), Will Teigen (sr., C), Austin Beavers (sr., OF), Hunter Jones (jr., OF/INF)

Top newcomers: *Gunnar Blix (jr., INF/P), Brett Coons (so, 3B/P), Coby Rothwell (so., OF)

Staff ace: Gunnar Blix — The right-handed power pitcher arrives from Wahkiakum (3-5, 2.10 ERA, 68 Ks in 2014) just in time to replace departed seniors Tanner Ruffe and Jose Hinojosa.

Outlook: The Jacks have a go-to guy on the mound in Blix and a big bat to lean on in three-hole hitter Spencer Thorsen (.508 BA, 3 HRs). If the rest of a young roster can fill in the blanks, RAL should compete in an up-for-grabs GSHL 2A. “Inexperience at the varsity level will be a challenge,” Coach Hulings said. “With (six of the first seven) games on the road, this definitely will be a big test to see what the Jacks are made of.”

Posted May 18/14 - RAL eliminated by Tumwater in districts
Tumwater 2, R.A. Long 1: Tanner Ruffe went toe to toe with Thunderbirds ace Garrett Terrell in a loser-out Southwest 2A District Tournament pitcher’s duel that came down to the final pitch Saturday in Chehalis. Morgan Baker hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh to draw the Lumberjacks within one. Stevie Smith followed with a single, his second of the game, but his pinch runner was stranded at second base to end the game and RAL’s season. “We’ve had some magic on that field before, so it was pretty neat to see that we battled all the way through to the end,” RAL coach Mark Hulings said. “I was extremely proud of our effort and our energy.” The Jacks upset sixth-ranked Hockinson on Wednesday to keep their season alive and set up Saturday’s loser-out matchup with third-ranked Tumwater. Ruffe made sure his team was in it throughout, scattering four hits and one walk over six innings with one earned run and two strikeouts. “Tanner Ruffe threw an outstanding baseball game,” Hulings said. “He commanded the strike zone. ... One of the best games I’ve ever seen him pitch.” RAL outhit Tumwater 5-4 on the game. It came down to four Jack errors, however, one of which translated into a T-Birds run. “We finished like I wanted us to play our entire season,” Hulings said. “We played with some tempo and some energy. It was awesome. I love how we played, no regrets.” RAL graduates seven seniors, including Ruffe, from a team that went 12-10 and finished third in the Greater St. Helens 3A League.

Posted May 15/14 - RAL baseball keeps season alive with district victory

It’s a phrase R.A. Long baseball coach Mark Hulings has used often this season, probably more than he’d like: “Flush it.”

When your Greater St. Helens 2A League title challenge flops early on, look to the postseason.

Lose by mercy rule in the opening round of the Southwest 2A District Tournament?

Hey, there’s always the consolation bracket.

If you surrender what had once been a 4-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, come out swinging in the seventh.

Barely a day after falling to Centralia 12-1 on the back of double-digit errors, the Lumberjacks rebounded to upset regular-season GSHL 2A champion Hockinson and keep their season alive with a dramatic 7-5 victory Wednesday on Wheeler Field at Fort Borst Park.

“We flushed it,” Coach Hulings said. “I just told the kids, ‘We have to be loose, be aggressive.’ I don’t think our kids had to get up, playing Hockinson.”

RAL faces Tumwater in another loser-out game Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at W.F. West.

But not before the Jacks savor this one for a while, judging by the celebratory whoops coming from the postgame huddle.

A group that saw similar preseason visions of playoff glory end without a single district playoff victory on the football field and basketball court — most of those losses in agonizing fashion – could finally let it all out.

“I wasn’t thinking about previous sports seasons,” RAL senior Brady Hulings said. “I was thinking about previous baseball seasons, what we’d done here. I knew that anything could happen.”

R.A. Long stormed in front early with a four-run top of the second.

Morgan Baker kicked things off with a double to center field, Tanner Ruffe drove in a pair of runs with an opposite-field single and Spencer Thorsen another with an infield single.

Hockinson slowly chipped away. A throwing error kept its second inning alive to produce a pair of runs.

Mitch Lines pulled the Hawks within a run with a third-inning single, but the Jacks restored that cushion when Jose Hinojosa scored ahead of a tag that would have clinched a rare 6-4-3-2 triple play in the sixth.

In the bottom half of that frame, the would-be second out turned into a runner on second when Thorsen pulled his strong throw across the diamond just over Steve Smith’s head at first.

Three batters later, Taylor Ellensohn tied the game at 5-5 with his fourth hit of the game.

“We were able to flush that play with (Thorsen) over here at first base,” Hulings said. “That allowed our energy to continue. They tied it up, but we didn’t push the panic button.”

That trademark short memory came in handy a few minutes later.

After Hunter Jones’ leadoff single, Brady Hulings pushed his first sacrifice bunt attempt wide of the first-base line then watched the second strike go right by.

“So then I just went for it,” Brady said.

He deposited the 0-2 pitch off the left-field wall to plate Jones with the go-ahead run.

Baker later scored Hulings with an infield single to make it 7-5. Tanner Ruffe relieved Hinojosa — who was resilient if not overpowering in 6 1/3 innings — with two on and one out in the bottom of the seventh.

Ruffe, who had only made it into the third inning of that opening-round loss, watched Greg Lord lift a pitch ominously to the warning track for the second out.

A deep breath and three sliders later, the Jacks, finally, were moving on.

Posted May 14/14 - Centralia 12, R.A. Long 1

Too many errors and not enough hits were a recipe for disaster for the Lumberjacks in a Southwest 2A District Tournament game on Ed Wheeler Field Tuesday in Centralia.

RAL (11-8) plays Hockinson in a loser-out game at 6 Wednesday night at Fort Borst Park.

“We kicked the ball around and it became contagious,” RAL coach Mark Hulings said. “There’s nothing you can say. You have to make the routine plays routinely and we didn’t.”

Centralia scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings and exploded for nine runs in the third. The Tigers collected three hits in the third, taking advantage of four RAL errors.

“(Starting pitcher Tanner) Ruffe did a good job getting ground balls but we couldn’t make the plays behind him,” Hulings said. “We needed players to step up and get him off the hill, but they didn’t do it.”

Ruffe allowed two hits and struck out three while pitching into the third inning.

RAL had six hits. Spencer Thorsen had two singles and Tyler Messenger added a double.

Posted May 5/14 - Jacks defeat undefeated Hockinson

R.A. Long 6, Hockinson 2:

A complete-game from Jose Hinojosa helped the Jacks avenge a pair of earlier defeats and hand the Hawks their first loss of the GSHL 2A season Monday at the Lumberyard.

“We were biting at the bit to get back at these guys,” RAL coach Mark Hulings said. “... That’ll hopefully be a springboard into district play next week.”

Hinojosa scattered four hits and struck out five, allowing just a single earned run.

At the plate, Tanner Ruffe had a two RBI double in RAL’s two-run first and an RBI single in the four-run fifth.

The Jacks (7-5 in league, 11-7) hosts Castle Rock to close out their regular season Wednesday.

Posted May 3/14 - R.A. Long 19, Ridgefield 2 (5 innings); R.A. Long 3, Ridgefield 1:
The Jacks bashed 20 hits in a Game 1 blowout then got a complete-game gem from Tanner Ruffe in the nightcap of a GSHL 2A doubleheader sweep Friday in Ridgefield. The wins locked up a Southwest 2A District Tournament bid for RAL (6-5 league, 10-7) ahead of its league finale at home against Hockinson on Tuesday. “We finally started seeing some of the hard work we’ve been doing at the plate,” RAL coach Mark Hulings said. “I’m extremely pleased with our mound presence.” Jose Hinojosa went all five innings in the first game, striking out five with two hits, but the real story was the RAL bats. Brady Hulings went 5 for 5, Ryan Peerboom and Hinojosa added three hits apiece, and Hunter Jones, Tyler Messinger and Spencer Thorsen all had two hits, including a two-run homer from Thorsen. The offense quieted down in Game 2, but Ruffe stepped up with his second complete-game win of the season against the Spuds, striking out seven while scattering three hits. Morgan Baker and Thorsen each had two hits and a double, with the former driving in the eventual game-winner in the third inning.

The Panthers knocked RAL starter Tanner Ruffe out of the game in less than two innings with seven runs, then held off the Jacks from there for a GSHL 2A win Tuesday in Washougal. Ryan Peerboom went 4 1/3 innings in relief of Ruffe, giving up five hits and three runs, and the Jacks got as close as 10-9 after a four-run sixth inning, but could never get over the hump. RAL (4-5 league, 8-7) tallied five hits total, including a Brady Hulings double. The Jacks travel to Ridgefield for a doubleheader on Friday.

Posted Apr 29/14 - Baker's late home run leads to Civil War split

Posted: Mon, 28 Apr 2014 10:02 PM

A year’s worth of disappointments were behind Morgan Baker’s swing.

R.A. Long had lost to Mark Morris in every single boys team matchup this school year. They fell by a touchdown in the Greater St. Helens 2A League-deciding football game and to last-second foul shots in both of the hardwood showdowns.

The Jacks left the bases loaded in the Story Field edition of the baseball Civil War a few weeks ago and were routed 18-6 in the five-inning Game 1 of Monday’s doubleheader at the Lumberyard.

“They’re going to make me lose my hair when I’m 35,” Baker said. “Those Monarchs will get you. I have (MM basketball coach Bill Bakamus) harassing me across the alley every day.

“I’ve had two shots in football and basketball and both were heartbreakers. I stepped to the plate with the same situation, with the game on the line.”

With two on and two out in the sixth inning, he delivered: Baker’s three-run bomb lifted RAL to a 7-6 win in the nightcap and salvaged a split on an evening of vented frustration.

Mark Morris was two days removed from surrendering control of the league title race in a loss against Hockinson, and the Monarchs came out swinging.

“We had a tough outing against Hockinson on Saturday,” Monarchs third basemen Lane Spenker said. “We just brought the energy into the game. We felt like pounding on them a little bit.”

MM (5-2 in league, 10-4) scored six runs in both the first and second innings of Game 1.

The Monarchs batted around in each frame behind six hits, six walks and three RAL errors. Spenker had two RBI doubles and the game was effectively over by the time R.A. Long (4-4 in league, 8-6) even got to the sixth man in its order.

Every MM starter reached base at least twice and Spenker, Cameron Mosier and Trevor Williams all had multiple hits.

The second game opened much as the first one had ended, with a Jack fumbling a ground ball — R.A. Long had seven errors in Game 1 alone and 12 on the day.

“It’s a contagious thing,” RAL coach Mark Hulings said. “This game is so emotional, especially with high school kids. One boot, and it turns into another error. It sort of snowballs. I think we feed off both the positive and negative. We’ve gotta be able to stop the bleeding sometimes.”

The pitching combination of Jose Hinojosa and Tanner Ruffe obliged, soldiering through even as the Monarchs opened a 4-1 fourth-inning lead thanks to a leadoff triple from Cody Enholm and a series of defensive miscues.

R.A. Long chipped away with single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings but stranded multiple runners on base in all of them.

Mark Morris turned to hard-throwing Max Tilton to protect a 5-3 lead in the sixth. Once he froze Ryan Peerboom with an outside fastball, Tilton was one out from the safety of the away dugout.

Then Baker stepped in and lifted a drive into the treetops beyond the fence in left-center.

“Max is a great fastball pitcher,” Baker said. “He can blow it by you. I was sitting back waiting for one of those. I got one right where I like it and the rest is history.

“I haven’t hit too many (home runs) in my day, but this one felt special.”

Even then, the Monarchs made them sweat. Mosier reached on a fielder’s choice and scored to pull the Monarchs within a run. Enholm made it all the way to third after the Jacks fumbled the tag that would’ve ended the game.

But Ruffe retired Max Leach with a sweeping curve and the catharsis was complete.

“We’ll come out ready to tear into somebody next time we play,” Richards said. “... We’re already looking at Washougal as somebody that’s going to have to take our frustrations.”

Their crosstown rivals know the feeling.

Hockinson 3, R.A. Long 0; Hockinson 4, R.A. Long 3:

The Jacks bats went silent in a GSHL 2A doubleheader sweep at the hands of the Hawks on Friday in Hockinson. RAL managed just two hits in the first game and four in the second as it dropped a pair of nail biters.

Red-hot Spencer Thorsen had two of those Game 2 hits, including a home run. “We didn’t have a whole bunch of energy,” RAL coach Mark Hulings said. “We made some base-running mistakes that sort of shot ourselves in the foot in a lot of situations.” Jose Hinojosa went 5 innings in Game 1 for RAL, striking out two, walking three and giving up seven hits. Before being relieved by Tanner Ruffe in the 6th. The Hawks scored two runs in the first and another in the fourth. With left-handed ace Joel Warden dealing on the mound, that was more than enough.

In Game 2, Jacks righty Tanner Ruffe took a 3-2 lead into the seventh — 59 of his 77 pitches went for strikes in 6 1/3 innings — only to hit two batters, give up an RBI single and see a potential double-play groundball skip off shortstop Brady Hulings’ glove to score the winning run. “Inches ... it was just right there,” Coach Hulings said. “It’s frustrating when you see it because it’s like, ‘Man, we’re right there guys.” R.A. Long (3-3 league, 7-5) hosts Mark Morris in a Civil War doubleheader on Thursday.

Posted Apr 15/14 - Ruffe deals in RAL win over Ridgefield

It began with the very first batter. That hard, biting slider R.A. Long right-hander Tanner Ruffe has worked on since grade school, darting, dropping and buckling the knees.

“Seeing guys backing out of the box on it, not even wanting any of it at all ... it means it’s effective,” Ruffe said.

It was also the driving force in the Lumberjacks’ 7-2 victory over Ridgefield Tuesday afternoon in the Lumberyard, an out pitch that took down one Spud after another in Greater St. Helens 2A League play.

“He works backwards well,” RAL coach Mark Hulings said. “His fastball sets up his second and third pitch and he has those for command. It’s tough for hitters. ... He gets them on the front foot then he can throw a fastball and he works his pitches well.”

It was all working Tuesday. Ruffe went all seven innings, striking out six while inducing 10 groundouts with a mix of fastballs and junk that kept the Spudders off balance.

If not for a few hiccups in the final frame — a seeing-eye single to start things off, a single plus an error in right field and a wild pitch — he would have finished with a shutout. As it was, he had to settle for his first complete-game win of the season.

“He was dominant on the bump today,” Hulings said. “He did a fantastic job, established his fastball, had a really good two pitch.”

After giving up a pair of hits in the first inning, Ruffe retired 15 of the next 19 batters he faced.

Two reached on walks in the second inning — the only two he gave up all day — another on an error and the other a single. Nary a Spud reached third until the seventh, and by that time RAL was ahead 7-0 thanks to a three-run first inning and four-run fifth.

“My curveball is kind of my go-to pitch whenever the fastball is working and you’ve got to change it up a little bit,” Ruffe said.

“I started throwing a slider when I was 12 because you’re not supposed to start throwing curveballs until you get older, so my dad had me throwing a slider and I just kept working with that. I just developed it over the years.”

Spencer Thorsen got things going for RAL (3-1 in league, 7-3 overall) in the first inning with an RBI double to right-center field that was a few feet shy of clearing the fence. Morgan Baker tomahawked a curveball into left field for a single two batters later to score Thorsen, and Ruffe fisted a flare to right to bring in Baker for a 3-0 lead.

The Jacks then took advantage of three Spudder errors in the fifth, scoring four runs with one hit and one walk. Ryan Peerboom lined an RBI single into left field and a sacrifice fly from Ruffe was set up by heads-up base running by Austin Beavers on Baker’s preceding sac bunt that took Beavers from first to third base.

“I was very pleased overall with all of the facets of our game today,” Hulings said. “Hitting, defense was key for us, base running was good, efficient and aggressive today.

“It’s a huge morale booster for our team, I think we need that. We expect to be where are at right now. Our kids are working extremely hard to put ourselves in position at the end to make a good run.”

It would have been almost perfect if not for that seventh inning.

Ridgefield eventually loaded up the bases with a pair of two-out singles, briefly putting into doubt an outcome that seemed assured since the opening frame. Ruffe gathered himself, twisted in a couple of strikes and then brought the heat high and tight. Strike three.

Thorsen pitched four innings with five strikeouts, and Brady Hulings tossed three relief innings for the victory.

Long baseball team topped Corbett 10-0 Wednesday at the Seaside tournament in Oregon.Ruffe struck out five in four innings of work, while Goldner struck out two in two. Only a pair of walks — one from each pitcher — kept them from tossing a perfect game.“(Ruffe) was very efficient and effective with his (curveball),” RAL coach Mark Hulings said. “He was able to work backwards at times and have an effective fastball behind it.”Ryan Peerboom went 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs, Morgan Baker had two hits — including a triple — and Brady Hulings added a double for RAL, which has won two straight after an 0-2 start to spring.“That was our goal to get back in the groove of things and establish a good presence on the hill, get a good presence at the plate,” Coach Hulings said. “We wanted to put the game in motion, and we were able to do that today. Overall, offensively and defensively today we were pretty sold.”The Jacks (2-2) face Sutherlin in their tournament finale Thursday.

RA. Long 13, Hudson’s Bay 0 (five innings): The Lumberjacks lineup came to life with 16 hits in their first win of the season Monday afternoon in nonleague action in Vancouver.

Spencer Thorsen and Tanner Ruffe each had four-hit games, Brady Hulings was 2 for 4 with a triple and Ryan Peerboom 2 for 4 as the Jacks (1-2) rebounded from a pair of losses to begin the season.

“Our bats had been sort of shy, but we faced two good pitchers the week before,” said RAL coach Mark Hulings, whose team scored four runs in losses to Woodland and Union. “Part of our goal was to find a bit of barrel today and get back into somewhat of a groove at the plate.”

The Jacks also got some strong innings on the mound from Thorsen and Peerboom, with the former getting the win with three innings of one-hit ball with three strikeouts and one walk. Peerboom pitched two scoreless innings.

RAL (1-2) travels to Seaside, Ore., for the Seaside Tournament on Wednesday and Thursday.

R.A. Long

Head coach: Mark Hulings (2nd season)

Last season: 6-6 in GSHL 2A (fourth), 10-9 overall; missed playoffs

Returning starters: *Brady Hulings, sr., SS/P; *Tanner Ruffe, sr., P/OF; Jose Hinojosa, sr., P/OF; Steve Smith, sr., 1B; Ryan Peerboom, sr., 3B/P/DH; Spencer Thorsen, jr., 3B/P; Tyler Messinger, jr., 2B/P

Top newcomers: Morgan Baker, sr., OF/1B; Hunter Jones, so., UT; Will Teigen, jr., C

Staff ace: Tanner Ruffe — A three-year starter, Ruffe followed a solid sophomore campaign with four wins, a 2.16 ERA and 32 strikeouts last season.

Outlook: Much like their football and basketball counterparts before them, RAL boasts plenty of varsity experience on the diamond, but little success.

After missing the playoffs for the first time in recent memory last year, and going 6-13-1 in 2012, RAL’s 10 returners — six seniors — must learn how to finish.

“Last season we had the lead after the fifth inning six times while losing,” Coach Hulings said.
