As we wait and see if the rain will hold off again today, in preparation for the Unicoi County Blue Devils coming to town, we look back at last night.  We understand the Happy Valley Warriors have graduated some very talented baseball players the last two years and that they may be a little down this season, but there have been times in the past we have lost to "down" teams.  Good baseball teams beat teams they are supposed to beat and that is what we did on Monday.  Mark Jennings was in total command on the bump and we hope we get many efforts like that on the mound this season, but looking at our lineup, if our pitchers can just keep us is in the game we feel our offense will score runs.  We feel like our pitchers do not have to be dominant everytime out for us to have a chance to win.
Our lineup blends a nice mix of speed and power and experience and youth.  We have some young players looking to make their mark on our program and in the Three Rivers Conference, and some veteran players who want to end their high school baseball careers with a good season.  We have some veteran guys who can hit the ball a long, long way, and some younger guys who can fly on the base paths.  We like the makeup of our baseball team.  The Three Rivers Conference is one of the toughest baseball conferences in the state of Tennessee.  We know we will have to play good baseball to have success.  You cannot just show up and win in this conference.
Sammy Hampton will take the ball today for the home team.  Hampton's last high school start saw him pitch six shutout innings against Happy Valley in the 2010 District 1 AA Tournament, before the Warriors got to him in the 7th inning.  Sammy likes the ball in big games, and although this is only the second game of the 2011 season, I would say having a chance to beat Unicoi County and move to 2-0 in the Three Rivers Conference is a big game.  We hope to see you at the ballpark.
