It has been a whirlwind of a season for the Johnson County Longhorns.  We have two solid wins agains the Sullivan North Raiders, a nice win at the Elizabethton Cyclones, and took the Three Rivers Conference leader, Sullivan East Patriots, to extra innings at East, but we also lost to the last place Happy Valley Warriors and were swept in a doubleheader on Friday, April 29th by the single A University High Jr. Buccanneers.  University High has a solid ball club in the Watauga Valley Conference, but we do not feel they are a team that we should lose to.  We beat the Holston Cavaliers on Thursday, April 7th by the score of 13-8, but only after spotting them an inexcusable 7-0 lead.  Obviously all of our big wins list above came with Mark Jennings toeing the rubber for the Longhorns and the frustrating losses came with other pitchers on the mound, but if we are going to win more than one game in the 2011 District 1 AA Tournament, we are going to have to win when someone else is on the bump.  Sawyer Ward has proven he can pitch winning baseball, as his three hitter proved on Friday, April 22nd vs. the Sullivan Central Cougars and Sammy Hampton pitched quality baseball in the 2009 and 2010 District 1 AA Tournaments (both vs. Happy Valley), so we have guys who can come up big for us.  Our defense has been much improved from the 2010 season, but in some of our losses and especially recently, it has let us down, and our offense, which is a strength of our team, has often struggled to get the big hit with runners in scoring position.  We say the season has been a whirlwind because our very mediocore 12-11 overall (5-8 Three Rivers Conference) record could so easily be much, much better.  As we begin the last week of the 2011 regular season, we would like to be playing good baseball going into the tournament.  We would like to be feeling good about ourselves going into the postseason, because right now, we do not really know what to think or what team to expect to show up at the ballpark.  We have the ability to beat anyone on any given day, so hopefully we do finish strong.  Hope to see you on the road with us on Monday and Tuesday, and see you at senior night on Thursday.  God bless.
