Posted Jan 7/13 - Tri City Indians for 2013

The Tri-City Indians are a Bantam AAA team that play in the very competitive BC Minor Bantam AAA league. The Indians, formerly Coq-Moody Reds, have run one of the top Bantam AAA programs in the province, competing near the top of the standings as well as graduating many players to JPBL and PBL teams.  The Indians play their home games out of beautiful Gates Park (Bird Field) in Port Coquitlam, located just off Lougheed Highway. The field is an easy commute for players and teams travelling from outside associations.  Last season the Indians finished a solid 4th in the 14 team division.  With the new import rules brought in by BC Minor, our team will be eligible for a minimum of 4 imports for the 2013 season and 5 imports should we decide to play under the Coq-Moody Reds banner alone.

The Indians coaching staff is one of the most experienced in BC at any level. Manager Randy Downes has coached in BC Minor Baseball for many years and has had great success at both the PeeWee AAA and Bantam AAA levels.  Last year, while also coaching the Indians, Downes coached the PeeWee CABA Select team to a World Series title in Sylvania, Ohio. During his long tenure in the PW Division, his PW AAA teams have captured 8 Western Canadian titles, 2 Canadian National Titles as well as Silver and Bronze medals at the Nationals. In 2005 Coq-Moody captured both the PW and Bantam AAA Provincial titles under his guidance. This was a feat never achieved before or since in BC Minor.  He was elected to the BC Minor role of honour in 2008.

Joining Downes on the coaching staff is Jeff Thompson; also a long time experienced coach.  Jeff spent many years coaching and serving on the executive in Coquitlam Little League before joining the Coq-Moody Reds coaching staff in 2005. Thompson spent 2005-2009 with the Reds before joining Downes in Burnaby for their Bantam AAA team in 2010. Following that year Thompson spent 2 years on the very successful Cloverdale Spurs coaching staff. We are very happy to have him returning "home" with us this year.  Jeff brings a lot to all the teams he coaches with.

Rounding out the coaching staff is Doug Dray who brought his son Jordan to Coq-Moody for PW AAA in 2011 and coached with the Indians last season. Doug is a big part of this program taking on, in addition to his coaching tasks, many of the tedious administrative tasks. He has also joined the executive of Coq-Moody Minor Baseball as the Bantam Co-ordinator and Director of Player development; a task Doug excelled at for many years in White Rock Little League. Doug is very devoted to the sport and spends countless hours throwing BP every practice and pre-game. He plays a huge role in our program and has a Masters Degree in Kinesiology from Simon Fraser University.

Tryouts:  The Indians will be holding tryouts starting in mid-February depending on the weather and how quick we are able to get outside. Depending on this, we anticipate having our team chosen no later than March 15th and possibly sooner.  There are a number of positions "wide-open" for 2013 as the Indians are only returning 2 players from the 2012 team. Any players from outside our boundaries wishing to attend tryouts with the Indians must first obtain a Try-out Release from Pat Weatherall of BC Minor.  Pat's contact info can be obtained by going to the BC Minor website. No player can attend a tryout session without a tryout release.  Note: Players living in North Vancouver and West Vancouver do not require a BC Minor release to play in the Tri Cities.  For further information, please contact Manager Randy Downes: downesrandy@hotmail.com

Training sessions:  The Indians have been holding off-season training sessions at Lionel Courchane Cage in Surrey throughout the fall and will continue through March.  Sunday morning sessions {8.30-10.00am} are run by Randy Downes and Monday/Friday nights are instructed by long-time Coach Dave Empy. There are limited spaces available for these dates and even though they are not official tryouts, prospective players are encouraged to attend. Often the tryout period is short and limited to weather conditions so it is always beneficial to players to be seen by the coaching staff as often as possible.  To inquire about our training sessions, please contact Doug Dray: mddray@telus.net
