Posted Jun 5/13 - June 1st Double Header at SSAP

On the day the calendar flipped to June, the Indians travelled to South Surrey to take on the much-improved White Rock Tritons in a DH.  The Tritons were missing their ace pitcher Alan Hogg, but on this day their starter Nilan Gunness pitched like an ace in his own right shutting the Indians down all day as the Tritons prevailed 10-4 in game 1 of the DH.  Indians SP Max Kondratowski struggled with his control early and, coupled with some sloppy infield play, the Indians got behind the eight ball and they could never recover. Tritons scored single runs in the 1st three innings to jump out to a 3-0 lead after 3. The Indians finally got on the board with a single run in the top of 5 when Coleton Rieta doubled with 2 out and scored on an error to short off the bat of Jordan Dray who reached first on the play. The momentum was short lived though as the Tritons potted 5 runs in the bottom of 5 off Max and reliever Jacob Simms. Indians got 1 back in the 6th when Alan led off with a 1B and was driven home by an RBI single by Matt Clay. Tritons scored 2 more in the bottom of 6 before the Indians tacked on 2 token runs in the top of 7 to make the score a little more respectable but White Rock prevailed 10-4.

Game 2 proved to be a totally different game as the Indians started White Rock native Jordan Dray and the bats were hot behind him all game long. Manager Randy Downes changed the batting order and it seemed to spark the offence. Coleton hit a 1 out 1B and then Dray was hit by a pitch bringing up Matt Clay who delivered a 2 RBI single putting Tri-City up 2-0 after 1. In the top of 2, the Indians added a solo run when Aaron Sinclaire led off with a BB and came around to score. The Tritons bounced back with a 3 spot in the bottom of 2 to tie it at 3 and then picked up 2 more in the bottom of the 3rd to lead 5-3. The Indians broke through however with 5 runs in the top of 4 to re-take the lead. Aaron and Lucas Ciachurski picked up 1 out walks and then Jacob Simms dropped down a sac bunt and reached on an error. Riley Engleson then doubled in both Sinclaire and Ciachurski to tie the game. Kyle Stubbins delivered a sac fly to CF to score Riley and then Coleton singled and was plated by an RBI single from Dray. Indians then really broke it open with a big-9 run inning in the top of 6. Key hits in that inning came from Dray with a triple and 3 RBI’s from Jacob Simms. Riley and Kyle also had hits in the inning and Riley finished with 3 hits in the game. Tritons got 1 back in the bottom of the 5th, but the Indians came away with the mercy run shortened 23-6 win setting up the rubber match tomorrow in the 3 game weekend set with the Tritons.
