Posted Apr 10/10 - JV Longhorns sweep Blue Devils

The JV Longhorns improved to 5-1 on the season after sweeping the Unicoi County Blue Devils in a doubleheader Saturday.  Sophomore, Andy Stout, pitched a seven inning complete game gem in the 3-2 game one win, as he only gave up 5 hits, and struck out 5, against 0 walks.  Harley Reece was the offensive hero for the Longhorns, as he went 2-3, with all three of the Longhorn RBI.  Reece knocked in Judd Hammons, who singled, in the 1st, Jacob Henson, who singled, in the 3rd, and Ryan Smith, who also singeld, in the 5th on a sacrifice fly to right field.  Leadoff hitter, Judd Hammons, and two hole hitter, Jacob Henson, both had two hits for Johnson County.

Jacob Henson took the ball on the mound in the second game, and after a rocky start, settled down to pitch 5 solid innings of baseball.  He departed the game facing a 4-2 deficit, but earned the win as the Longhorns scored 6 in the bottom of the 5th.  Ryan Mahala continued his recent good relief work, by pitching a solid 6th inning, striking out one batter.  Junior, Austin Humphrey, dressed with the JV Club on Saturday to get some work on the mound in hopes he can contribute as a pitcher for the Varsity.  Not only did he pitch the 7th inning, he also caught behind the dish as well for several innings, because starting catcher, Ryan Smith, was taken out of the game due to an arm injury.  Humphrey struggled with his control in the 7th, and Unicoi had came to within a run, 8-7, but Humphrey made a big play to end the game, as a Unicoi player tried to steal 3B, because the JV Blue Devils third base coach thought Humphrey was paying him no attention.  He turned and threw to Harley Reece at 3B, and Reece applied the game ending tag.  Harley Reece did not let up offensively in game two, as he went 3-4 for the Longhorns.  Jacob Henson didn't make an out, as he went 3-3.  Judd Hammons, Andy Stout who was the designated hitter in game two, Chad Hodgkiss, and Ryan Mahala, also had base knocks for the Longhorns.  Hodgkiss played a nice situational baseball game, as he laid down a sacrifice bunt and executed a nice hit and run for the Longhorns.  He also made a nice play at second base, when a Unicoi runner attempted to slow down in front of a ground ball to shield Chad's view of the ball.  Hodgkiss stuck with the play and made a big out at first base.
