Posted Apr 12/10 - Very Frustrating day for Longhorn Baseball
When the 2010 season is complete, and we look back, I do not think there will be a more frustrating memory than Monday, April 12th.  The Longhorns traveled to play a Sullivan North team that was winless in the Three Rivers Conference.  They are winless no more.  North had a 1-0 lead going into the top of the 6th inning, but Sawyer Ward led off the inning with a single to left field.  Eric Cullop then sacrifice bunted him over to second base.  Zack Hayworth has been struggling as of late, but we hope Monday got him going, as he knocked in Ward with a double to left field.  Two batters later, first baseman, Tyler Fenner, scored Hayworth from second with a two strike hit in the 5.5 hole between third base and shortstop.  The Horns went into the bottom of the 6th with a 2-1 lead, feeling good with senior ace, Cody Greer, on the hump.  Greer pitched well, giving up only five hits over his six innings of work.  Greer struck out five against four walks.  The bottom of the 6th started off well for Johnson County, as Greer got the Sullivan North first baseman to hit a "can of corn" fly ball to left field for the fist out.  Greer then gave up back to back singles, which put runners on first and second with one out.  Back to back passed balls put North up 3-2.  Greer also gave up another sinlge and a walk in the inning, but struck out two straight to end the 6th.  David Lunceford flew out to left to begin the Longhorn 7th.  Sammy Hampton was then hit in the back by a pitch, to give Johnson County a base runner with one out.  Cody Greer was next up at the plate, looking to help his own cause.  He lined out to right field, but Hampton, who thought he had been given the steal sign, took off for second base, and did not make it back to first base before being doubled off to end the game.  Very frustrating day for Longhorn Baseball.

The JV Longhorns were coming off huge back to back wins against the Unicoi County Blue Devil JV squad, but that did not matter on Monday.  Freshman, Andy Woods, made the first start of his high school career, and did not pitch bad, but a win was not to be for Johnson County.  He left the game facing a 6-1 deficit.  Johnson County battled back to tie it at 6, but North scored two in the bottom of the 4th to take an 8-6 lead.  They made that score hold up in the top of the 5th.  Chad Hodgkiss went 2-2 with a double and a signle for the Longhorns.  He knocked in two runs.  Jacob Henson hit a double and scored a run.  The JV Longhorns are now 5-2 on the season.

The Elizabethton Cyclones are now coming to Johnson County, this Thursday, April 15th.  This game will be played due to the washout on March 22nd.  First pitch is scheduled for 5:00.

We travel to Sullivan East tomorrow.  Mark Jennings is scheduled to get the ball for the Longhorns.  The Patriots recently defeated the Unicoi County Blue Devils by the score of 2-1.
