Posted Apr 20/10 - Longhorns 6 Blue Devils 8
The crazy 2010 high school baseball season continues for the Johnson County Longhorns.  We played what was at that time, our worst game of the season, on Monday, April 12th, in a loss at Sullivan North.  We came back the very next day and played competitive baseball at Sullivan East.  We earned a huge win, coming back from a 5-0 deficit, last Thursday against Elizabethton, to win 7-6, on a Sammy Hampton walkoff hit.  Yesterday, we played what may have been a more disappointing game than the game at Sullivan North, playing sloppy, uninspired baseball in a 6-3 loss at Happy Valley.  Then we come to today, Tuesday, April 20th.  We traveled to Unicoi County to face the Blue Devils.  For the third time this year we took an early lead.  We had 3-0 leads on the Blue Devils in our first two games against them.  On Tuesday, we jumped out to a 1-0 lead, as Sawyer Ward lead off the game with a home run, his second of the season.  The Blue Devils had taken a 3-1 lead going into the 2nd inning, but a 2 RBI double by Ward, and a run scoring single by Zack Hayworth gave Johnson County a 4-3 lead.  Ward scored shortstop, Cody Greer, and courtesy runner, Jacob Henson (running for David Lunceford).  Hayworth plated Ward on his base knock.  The Blue Devils had taken an 8-4 lead, but the Longhorns scored two runs in the top of the 7th.  Greer led off the Johnson County 7th with a walk, as the Longhorns were taking until Unicoi County starting pitcher, Seth Whitson threw strikes.  Unicoi Coach, Charlie Baxter, brought reigning conference pitcher of the year, Logan Rice, in for the second time this season against Johnson County, to get them out of a jam.  Ward then worked a walk out of Rice, to put runners at 1st and 2nd for the visiting team.  Centerfielder, Eric Cullop, who went 1-4 with an RBI on the day, struck out.  Zack Hayworth, who went 2-4 on the day, then had a check-swing grounder fielded by the pitcher, Rice, and was thrown out at 1B.  Rightfielder, Austin Humphrey, then struck out, but the ball got by the catcher, J, Birchfield, and Humphrey reached first base to load the bases for first baseman, Tyler Fenner.  Fenner worked Logan Rice to a full count and hit a sharp grounder to second baseman, H. Tolley, but Tolley could not make a play on the grounder.  Greer and Ward scored on the Unicoi error.  Mark Jennings, who started on the mound, before moving to left field, came up with Humphrey on 3B and Fenner on 1B, but Jennings struck out to end the Longhorn threat, and the baseball game.  Although Jennings did not keep the rally going, he did go 4 innings on the mound, giving up 7 hits and 5 earned runs, with 2 Ks and 2 base on balls.  Jennings record dropped to 1-2 on the 2010 season.  Zack Hayworth was in relief for the second straight game.  He went 2 innings, and gave up 1 run on 1 hit, struck one batter out and walked a Unicoi batter.  The crazy seaon continues for the Longhorns, as we travel to Sullivan Central on Thursday, and travel to Roan Mountain to face the Cloudland Highlanders on Friday.  Friday's first pitch is now schedule for 1:00, because Cloudland has their prom later on that night.  The JV Longhorns will host Sullivan East on Friday afternoon at home.
