Posted May 3/10 - Longhorns 4 vs. Patriots 6 Recap
Sammy Hampton continues to pitch in "tough luck."  He did not dominate the Sullivan East Patriots on Monday afternoon in game one of a doubleheader, but he pitched well enough to pick up his first victory of the 2010 season.  Hampton gave up 8 hits over 7 innings of work, striking out 2, walking 4, and surrendering 6 runs, of which 4 were earned.  It was Hampton's second consecutive complete game effort.  Sawyer Ward has now hit safely in 16 of our 18 games this season, as the junior leadoff hitter went 2-3, with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 6th, and an RBI single in the bottom of the 7th.  Eric Cullop, Zack Hayworth, Tyler Fenner, Sammy Hampton, and Cody Greer all had hits for the Longhorns.  Fenner's was a two strike, RBI single, and Greer's was a 2B to lead off the 6th inning.

Sawyer Ward took one for the team in the second game of the doubleheader.  Johnson County will be playing 8 games in 6 days this week, and on Monday afternoon, Ward gave the staff a spot start.  It was his second start of the 2010 season, with the other coming at Cloudland.  Ward pitched into the 3rd inning before tiring.  Austin Humphrey came on in relief for Ward, before he gave way to senior centerfielder, Eric Cullop, who was making the first pitching appearance of his high school career.  Freshman lefty, Jacob Henson, also got some valuable time on the mound.  Zack Hayworth hit a double for the Longhorns.  Anytime you play this many games in such a short time span, it leaves many ideas and opinions of how one should handle their pitching staff.  Some may say that we should not have thrown Sammy Hampton on Monday, because Monday's games really did not mean anything as far as the conference standings go, compared to Tuesday's games against North.  Throwing Hampton did give us a chance to win, and it will allow him to be available on Friday in the district tournament opener, on three days rest.  Cody Greer and Mark Jennings will start on Tuesday against North.  If Sammy would have been held out until Wednesday, against Elizabethton, we would not have had anyone on our Varsity starting staff who was on proper rest going into the district tournament opener on Friday.  Almost any decision made leaves one open to be second guessed, especially if the outcome does not come out in your favor, as was the case on Monday afternoon in Johnson County.  The Horns need a sweep of the doubleheader on Tuesday to move ahead of Sullivan North and finish 5th in the Three Rivers Conference.
