Posted Aug 1/10 - Muskies Take 2nd/ Head to Regions
After
winning their opening playoff series against Bemidji, the Muskies earned the
right to play in the Norman-Polk League Championship Series against the Ada Athletics.Game 1 of the best of three series was
scheduled for last Wednesday in Ada but the Muskies were forced to forfeit due
to a lack of players.Game 2 took place Friday
night in Warroad at Tony Stukel Field. The
first few innings were a pitchers’ duel with neither team threatening until Warroad
got to their second at bats of the evening, but the Muskies failed to score as
they had one runner thrown out at home in the fourth inning and runners
stranded on second and third in the fifth inning. On the defensive side, The Muskies were
cruising behind the arm of Kyle Nowacki until the sixth inning, when three
straight Warroad errors, all on errant throws, led to three unearned Ada runs.Over the past year coming from behind has
become a norm for the Muskies and they had to do it once again. In the bottom
half of the sixth they chipped away at the lead as Shaun Storey hit a double
scoring Brent Culleton.Nowacki would shut
down Ada in the seventh and the Muskies were back at the plate where Nowacki helped
his cause by stroking a double scoring Bryce DeMolee from second cutting the Ada
lead to 3-2.In the top of the 8th,
Ada had another threat with two outs and the bases loaded, but Nowacki pitched
out of the jam to end the inning and the scoring threat. In the bottom of the eighth Shaun Storey
reached base on an error and was subsequently moved over to second on a
bunt.Aaron Storey would then hit a infield
single getting Shaun to third. During
the next at bat Aaron Storey took off for second drawing a throw from the
pitcher and getting into a rundown, which allowed Shaun to score from third tying
the game at 3-3.The ninth inning would
pass by without either team getting on base.In the top of the tenth, errors would prove costly once again for the
Muskies, with two runners on and one out Ada would hit a groundball but a
misplay at second base led to the bases being loaded with still only one out in
the inning. Ada would regain the lead
after the next batter walked, but two more runs would score for Ada after another
error during a broken-up double play attempt. The Muskies failed to mount a threat in the bottom of the tenth inning and
lost Game 2, 6 to 3 and the series, 2 games to 0.Nowacki went all 10 innings, striking out 15,
and allowing only 3 hits.Aaron Storey
went 3 for 5, Jalen Stay 2 for 4, while Nowacki and Shaun Storey each had RBI
doubles. The big difference in the game
was the errors as Warroad had six compared to Ada’s two.By finishing second in the Norman-Polk League
playoffs Warroad has qualified for the Region 12C playoffs.Warroad will play on August 7th at
1 pm in Ada against the Moorhead Brewers who are the West Central League
Champions and are currently on an 18 game winning streak. Also qualifying are
the Moorhead Expos and Ada Athletics.
