Jr. Jacks come out swinging by Jackie Dempster-O'Halloran/Special to The Scugog Standard
Despite little or no cooperation from the weatherman over the last month, the Port Perry Lake Scugog Lumberjacks Bantam fastball team finally got their squad selected for the upcoming season. This year, the boys have moved up to the Bantam age group and have a team consisting of all minor players, but that doesn’t seem to worry them. Their goal is to win games any way they can!
There is a great deal of talent on this team, with a blend of three seasoned pitchers all having different styles and strengths. Returning from last year’s team are some strong defensive players, who have been consistently successful at the plate. Couple that with a few new members who will definitely add value and this team is going to surprise a lot of people.
The roster includes: (3) Trent Cooper, (7) Corey Crosby, (21) Brandon Griffen, (11) Ryan Jones, (23) Layne O’Halloran, (81) Matt Reid, (14) Jesse Simmons, (44) Jeff St. Pierre, (91) Cody Till and (#99) Jake Thompson.
Last Tuesday, the Jacks hosted the Oshawa Bulldogs in their home opener at the lakefront. Port Perry took an early lead in the first, as Jake Thompson drove in a run on a single and Ryan Jones added two on his double to left field. Oshawa answered with two of their own in the second but that was the end of the scoring for the Bulldogs.
In the second inning, Brandon Griffen and Corey Crosby chalked up RBIs on singles. Jeff St. Pierre hit two singles in the game, cashing in two runs for the team. Matt Reid collected an RBI in the fifth on a single over the shortstop, and Brandon Griffen singled to add another RBI to his count on the night.
Jeff St. Pierre looked strong, striking out the side in the first and second innings. Ryan Jones managed the same feat during the third and fourth innings. Brandon Griffen pitched the final three innings, striking out five and assisting on four other putouts. The pitching staff combination threw a no-hitter, with the final score 9-2 for your Port Perry Lumberjacks.
