Weather can’t keep Jacks from win
by Jackie Dempster O'Halloran/Special to The Scugog Standard

It really has been hit or miss for the Port Perry Lake Scugog Lumberjacks Bantam fastball team with regards to the weather, but the same cannot be said for the team. They continue to look good at the start of this season. Winning their second game in as many starts, this team is showing that they have some depth to their roster.

The Jacks have had two games cancelled due to unsafe field conditions over the last week but they did manage to get one in last Tuesday, May 24, at the lakefront diamonds against the Cobourg Clippers - and it was a great ball game to watch.

Ryan Jones pitched the entire game for Port Perry and had a fantastic outing, giving up just four hits and two earned runs, and striking out eight on the night. The Jacks’ bats were silent until the fourth inning, when Brandon Griffen’s soft infield hit scored a hard sliding Corey Crosby from third base, giving the Jacks the lead. Cobourg’s pitching duo did not go easy on Port Perry batters, allowing only six hits, with a few of them being weak infielders, and striking out seven in the match.

In the top of the sixth, with runners at first and second, #48 of the Clippers hit a long ball to centre field. He scored a run but a great throw by Matt Reid and a textbook block at the plate by Layne O’Halloran saved an additional run from scoring. This allowed Cobourg to tie up the game at one apiece.

The Clippers pulled ahead in the seventh using two sacrifices to score their lead-off walk. Cody Till started off the seventh for the Jacks with a single. He was followed by Jake Thompson, whose base hit passed a sprawling shortstop to put Port in a great position for a comeback win. Patience at the plate by Trent Cooper filled the bases for call-up Clayton Robinson, who picked up an RBI to tie the game on a soft hit ball to the pitcher. With the bases loaded and two out, Ryan Jones’ infield single gave the Jacks the 3-2 win.
