Make the most of your opportunities! That’s exactly what the Port Perry Lake Scugog Lumberjacks Bantam fastball team did last Thursday when they visited the Cobourg Clippers at the Legion fields in Cobourg.

This was an extremely tight game with two talented pitchers going the distance. Pitching for Port Perry was #44 Jeff St. Pierre, who allowed only three hits, striking out 16 batters and giving up no earned runs. The Clippers’ infielders robbed the Lumberjacks all night of what should have been a handful of base hits, as Cobourg put on a defensive show for the large crowd in attendance. Their starter also showed his good arm, allowing only three hits on the night.

Port Perry took the lead in the third on Trent Cooper’s sacrifice bunt to advance the runner, and Jesse Simmons’ hot hit single cashed in the first run of the game.

In the fifth inning, the Jacks added to their lead when Cody Till blasted a ball to deep centre field for his first home run of the season.

The Clippers threatened in the fifth and sixth innings with runners on base, but St. Pierre attacked the strike zone to overpower Cobourg’s batters and prevent any runs from scoring.
In the top of the seventh, Port Perry added an insurance run when Cody Till scored from third base on a wild pitch. In the bottom of the inning the Clippers managed to break the shutout on a hard hit ball to the outfield, coupled with a Lumberjack error for their only run of the game.

Port Perry’s offensive star was Cody Till, who crossed the plate for all three Lumberjacks runs. The Jacks took this one by a score of 3-1.

Port Perry’s other game of the week was also a great outing, this one against the Pickering Heat, a team to whom the Jacks had lost the week before when they failed to cash in a base runner.

Ryan Jones and Jake Thompson had two hits each in the game. Jeff St. Pierre and Matt Reid added hits and Layne O’Halloran collected two RBIs in the 9-7 victory. Starter Ryan Jones had a great night allowing one earned run on three hits and striking out seven batters in six innings of play to pick up another win to add to his record.
