HERON LAKE — An
eight-hit, nine-run output in the top of the fourth inning sparked the
Worthington Cubs to a 9-6 victory over the Heron Lake Lakers in a First
Nite League amateur baseball game Sunday evening at Laker Field.
Heron
Lake, which claimed a 3-1 win over Lakefield earlier in the day to
begin the doubleheader, took a 1-0 lead after Ben Scheevel (2-for-4)
tripled and scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by Thomas Albrecht in the
second inning.
But
the Cubs, who cracked four hits without scoring through the first three
frames, strung together a big rally in the fourth — sending 13 batters
to the plate and scoring all nine of their runs to build a 9-1
advantage.
Marcus
Maras (two-run double), Josh Wasmund (tworun single), Jerrad Meinders
(RBI single) and Marshall Doeden (RBI double) each smashed run-producing
base hits in the inning, while Cody Melendrez, Nate Jensen, Adam Munkel
and Mitch Jensen also ripped singles to help Worthington’s cause.
Maras,
Wasmund, Meinders and Munkel each finished the game with two hits,
while Joey Kinley collected a single to complete the Cubs’ 13-hit
offensive attack.
Heron Lake rallied with five runs in the bottom of the seventh to close the gap to 9- 6.
Ethan Duffy (3-for-4, two doubles) and Scheevel cracked back-to-back
tworun singles, while Kirk McBreen delivered an RBI single, as well.
Tony
Jorgensen, Matt Franks, Lucas Knutson and Alex Meyer also singled
throughout the game for the Lakers, who batted 10 players in the seventh
and had the potential tying run at the plate when the third out was
recorded.
Mitch
Jensen picked up the complete-game win on the mound, striking out five
batters and issuing just one walk over seven solid innings for
Worthington. He scattered 10 hits and allowed just two earned runs, as a
Cubs’ error with two outs in the seventh extended Heron Lake’s comeback
bid.
Lon
Eichenberger (one strikeout, one walk, 10 hits) also permitted just two
earned runs (seven total) in his 3 2/3 innings of work for Heron Lake,
but took the loss. Scheevel (2 1/3 innings) and Duffy (one inning)
finished up in relief for the Lakers.
Worthington,
which is now 5-9 overall and 5-8 in the league after snapping a sixgame
losing streak, hosts Jackson Wednesday night. First pitch is set for
7:30 p.m.
