Posted May 18/14 - RAL eliminated by Tumwater in districts
Tumwater 2, R.A. Long 1: Tanner Ruffe went toe to toe with Thunderbirds ace Garrett Terrell in a loser-out Southwest 2A District Tournament pitcher’s duel that came down to the final pitch Saturday in Chehalis. Morgan Baker hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh to draw the Lumberjacks within one. Stevie Smith followed with a single, his second of the game, but his pinch runner was stranded at second base to end the game and RAL’s season. “We’ve had some magic on that field before, so it was pretty neat to see that we battled all the way through to the end,” RAL coach Mark Hulings said. “I was extremely proud of our effort and our energy.” The Jacks upset sixth-ranked Hockinson on Wednesday to keep their season alive and set up Saturday’s loser-out matchup with third-ranked Tumwater. Ruffe made sure his team was in it throughout, scattering four hits and one walk over six innings with one earned run and two strikeouts. “Tanner Ruffe threw an outstanding baseball game,” Hulings said. “He commanded the strike zone. ... One of the best games I’ve ever seen him pitch.” RAL outhit Tumwater 5-4 on the game. It came down to four Jack errors, however, one of which translated into a T-Birds run. “We finished like I wanted us to play our entire season,” Hulings said. “We played with some tempo and some energy. It was awesome. I love how we played, no regrets.” RAL graduates seven seniors, including Ruffe, from a team that went 12-10 and finished third in the Greater St. Helens 3A League.
