Lumberjacks Back in the Swing of Things

By: Jackie Dempster-O’Halloran

Special to the Standard

With the wonderful weather finally on its way it must be time for some baseball.  The Lake Scugog Lumber Jacks Peewee fastball team has been chosen for the upcoming season, after an intense tryout schedule starting last September and ending a few weeks ago the coaching staff had their work cut out for them.  It wasn’t easy picking from the vast pool of talent coming from not only Port Perry but Stouffville, Scarborough and Pickering however the coaches managed to get the mission accomplished.  The roster has 13 players consisting of 11 majors and 2 minors with 7 returning from last year’s team.  There will be plenty of depth in the pitching department and defensively the team looks solid.  Head Coach Ian Griffen is expecting great things from this lineup and is optimistic about the team’s ability to do well in the Provincials which are being held right here in Port Perry on the August 14-15 weekend so don’t forget to mark your calendars.

This year’s roster is comprised of the following players; (97) Jake Bricknell, (7) Corey Crosby-Maranan, (8) Hunter Davidson, (14) Kyle Dickson, (32) Patrick Fiorino, (21) Brandon Griffen, (11) Ryan Jones, (23) Layne O’Halloran, (81) Matt Reid, (51) Clayton Robinson, (94) Dylan Smith, (44) Jeff St. Pierre and (91) Cody Till.

Last week the team played a double header against the Pickering Heat’s Bantam team.  Game one saw the Jacks dominate from the get go as they scored 3 runs in the first inning.  To add fuel to the fire, Pickering’s starter did not help his own cause walking 7 batters in the second and allowing 8 more runs to score.

Jeff St. Pierre had a strong pitching performance with 11 strike outs in 5 innings.  Base hits by Ryan Jones, Jeff St. Pierre, Hunter Davidson, Dylan Smith and Corey Crosby-Maranan cashed in a pile of base runners and gave the Jacks a 12-4 victory.

In the second game the Heat caught the fever as they took a 5 nothing lead on a couple well placed hits and a costly error by Port Perry.  The Jacks tried to get back into the game in the 4th as Pickering’s starter could not seem to find the strike zone walking 7 batters and allowing the Jacks to score 5 runs.  Pickering continued to cash runs in during the 3rd, 4th and 5th inning enhancing their lead.  The Jacks managed 4 hits during the second game by Kyle Dickson, Clayton Robinson, Ryan Jones and Patrick Fiorino.  The Heat scorches the Lumberjacks by a score of 14-7.
