The Lake Scugog Lumberjacks fastball team is having difficulties finding local peewee teams to play in the area, as more and more teams disband in the east, it seems that tournaments are the best option to get some fair competition as the western teams flourish and expand.  The team did apply to play in the York/Durham Bantam league but were prohibited even though they proved to be talented enough splitting a double header against the Pickering Heat team, a team who is expected to be a strong contender to win the league championship.

There still are a few skilled peewee teams in the east and last Tuesday was the first true test for the Jacks as their rival the Cobourg Clippers came to town to play at the Lakefront diamonds.    

The Jacks took an early lead in the first as the Clippers’ centre fielder and second baseman were given errors on routine plays that coupled with a sacrifice by Layne O’Halloran lead the way for a great night.  Two more runs were added to the lead in the 3^rd as Jeff St. Pierre hit a mammoth home run to left field igniting the crowd.  During the 4^th Kyle Dickson scored from third on another error in the field adding to the lead.  In the final inning Clayton Robinson hit a triple to deep right and Brandon Griffen singled to shallow left to cash in the run.  Additional hits by Dylan Smith, Ryan Jones Matt Reid, and Jacob Bricknell helped the Jacks to an easy 7-0 win over the Clippers.  Solid pitching performances by the entire staff kept Cobourg off the board as Jeff St. Pierre posted 9 strikeouts in 4 innings.  Ryan Jones had 2 quick innings allowing only one hit and Brandon Griffen finished them off in 7^th allowing no hits.   Defensively Port Perry had a solid performance with only one error in the game.

The Clippers’ bats were cold this evening as they were able to compile only 3 hits on the night 2 of them by Josh Jesckhe.  Defensively Josh Maguire was phenomenal at short robbing a number of Jacks of base hits, Josh also assisted on 4 put outs at second base as the Jacks were unsuccessful in their attempts at stealing.
