Posted Jun 8/10 - BRETT DRAFTED AND YEAR END AWARDS CEREMONY

The 2010 Highline Baseball Season was officially put to bed with the year end awards ceremony followed by the Major League Baseball Draft which included a familiar face.  The awards ceremony bid farewell to nine seniors and recognized the following players with special recognition.

First team All-League: Jacob Wydick-1st Base: Ryan Lingle-Pitcher: Jonny Locher-Outfield: Ryan Brett-Shortstop:  First Team Academic All-League:  Jonny Locher and Luke Werle.

In addition, Ryan Brett was selected as a unanimous choice to repeat as the Seamount League MVP.  Brett and Locher were also named  Washington State Coaches Association First Team All-State and Brett was selected as the 3-A State Player of the year for 2010.  Ryan joins former Pirate, Ben Guidos (2005) as the only two HHS players to have received this award.

The evening culminated with the team awards starting with Jacob Wydick's selection as "Most Improved," Logan Brickell as "Pirate of the Year," Luke Werle for ther coveted "Coaches Award," Ryan Brett as "MVP" and Jeremy Rowden was selected as the "Aaron Pinto, Most Inspirational Award" winner.

The big news for Ryan Brett had to wait until the next morning when his name was called in the third round of the MLB players draft.  Ryan was selected with the 98th pick overall by the Tampa Bay Rays.  This was also the highest any Pirate has ever been drafted in the 87 year history of the school.  Brett joins two other local high school baseball phenoms, Josh Sale and Drew Vettleson on the Tampa Bay Rookie Team.  The following link shows video footage of Ryan which was posted on the MLB Network website.  http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?topic_id=10018074&content_id=8634737

More details regarding Ryan's professional baseball career will be chronicled on this website during the summer as he has agreed to keep us regularly posted as the season progresses.

Finally, Jonny Locher is scheduled for arthroscopic surgery tomorrow (Wednesday) in Birmingham, Alabama to assess the magnitude of the knee damage he sustained in an on-field collision a week and a half ago.  The prognosis is optimistic for a 100% recovery in time for the 2011 High School Season.  Our best wished go out to Jonny for a successful rehab and a quick recovery.

My thanks are extended to all of the players, parents, coaches, fans and contributers who were a part of the 2010 season.  I would also like to thank our opponents and their families who regularly visit this website during the year (I know you are out there).  You  all helped make this season memorable. We had another successful season and 2011 should be just fine too.
