Former Rocket Clarkson performs well in U of L Pizza Series

 

Arnold's Attack Wins Pizza Bowl With 14-5 Triumph in Finale
Grieshaber leads Attack with three hits, three RBI and three runs in the win

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sophomore Kyle Grieshaber had three hits, three RBI and scored three runs to lead Arnold's Attack to a 14-5 Pizza Bowl series clinching victory over Xan's Zephyrs on Wednesday afternoon at Jim Patterson Stadium.   

With the win in Wednesday's Pizza Bowl finale, which closed out the Cardinals' fall workouts, the Attack completed its comeback from a 2-1 series deficit for the victory. The Attack was coached by former Louisville catcher Jeff Arnold, while Cardinals' volunteer assistant coach Xan Barksdale coached the Zephyrs in the series.   

Grieshaber (Chesterfield, Mo./Marquette HS) led the way for the Attack' with a pair of doubles in his 3-for-5 performance at the plate. Junior Stewart Ijames (Owensboro, Ky./Owensboro Catholic HS) and freshman Jeff Gardner (Louisville, Ky./Whitefield Academy) finished with two hits and two RBI each for the Attack, while freshman Alex Chittenden (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central HS) added a hit and three RBI in the win. Junior Ryan Wright (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead HS), sophomore Zak Wasserman (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore HS) and freshman Kyle Gibson (Henderson, Ky./Henderson County HS) also added two hits each.   

On the mound, junior righty Derek Self (Cave City, Ky./Caverna HS) earned the win after allowing one earned run on three hits with three strikeouts in 2.1 innings of relief after replacing sophomore righty Mike Nastold (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder HS), who allowed one earned run on two hits in three innings in the starting role for the Attack.  

For the Zephyrs, sophomore Jarred Clarkson (Shelbyville, Ky./Shelby County HS) finished 4-for-5 with a run scored, freshman Ty Young (Coatesville, Pa./Malvern Prep School) had three hits and three runs scored and freshman Cole Sturgeon (Owensboro, Ky./Owensboro Catholic HS) added two hits, an RBI and a run scored in the loss.

Louisville will open the 2011 season at the BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge on Feb. 18-20 in St. Petersburg, Fla., where the Cardinals will play Michigan, Ohio State and Minnesota. The complete 2011 Louisville baseball schedule will be released later in the fall.
